The Other Guide: Avoid rip-off Britain; Steps for getting the iPhone in November, unlocked and cheap

Ok so here's another guide. Not saying the other is rubbish but this could be a good alternative.

Step 1. Patience is the key. Wait until November the 9th and get yourself a tasty new iPhone, preferrably from an Apple store. The idea is you take it home and activate the contract by itunes.

Step 2: Do not activate the contract. Instead, use many unlocking methods to set the iPhone free. Sure, they may of updated the firmware, but they'll be a new app around the block by that time.

Step 3: Do you have a contract? Well, if not, do this. Find yourself a contract that gives you a good data plan, and a good handset, and use this for your iPhone. You then have a handset to sell on eBay and recoup costs, (nokia n95 e.g., could almost get the price of the iPhone back, effictively making it free).

Step 4: Use the sim from your new contract in your iPhone, and enjoy! Remember, you'll get no visual voicemail and no unlimited data (unless your new contract plan includes it), as per the other guide. Although, the Cloud Wifi network may work, who knows. It's not like it can validate through phone number as it doesn't work that. It might sense once you're using an iPhone, it gives you access, but I could be totally wrong with that.

Benefits: No faffing around sending money to people you don't know in the US. No customs. You get a full UK warranty, just return it to the apple store if it goes kaput. UK charger and accessories.

Just thought. You could even find a contract that gives you cashback, there's always some roaming around where the you get cashback to the equivalent of the contract - making it free. You'd have to pay for the iPhone, but you'd be getting contract minutes and texts for nothing!

MonkeyHugger - Yes this is an option but here's the other side to it.

1. hardware specs are the same so there will be no advantage to a UK iPhone
2. modifying the phone with unlock software may disqualify the warranty anyway
3. you are waiting another month and paying more for getting the same thing

I think the only advantage to waiting is (1) if Apple secretly add 3G and (2) if you want a contract.

Edit: Sorry yes less faffing about is worth something so that is an advantage. Not dumping on it!

Your warranty is not voided by unlocking.

I thought the only way of unlocking it to a different network was by opening it up and soldering it?

Where did you get that from MonkeyHugger?

:
What kind of activities will void my warranty?
Apple’s Limited Warranty for iPhone excludes coverage for damage resulting from accident, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications. Please review the warranty for further details.

No there is a software unlock now but it does rewrite the firmware as well as low level something or other on the chip (baseband?)

Yeah that's all about modifiying the handset. Unlocking is done by software. An apple dev has even said they're not fussed about third party applications. I'll find the link in a minute.

can you not add 3g to it by bluetoothing with a 3g phone? I assume it has bluetooth?

this version is my preffered way of doing it, it's an extra tenner but a lot safer IMO.

No it doesn't. A manufacturer can say what they like, but unless the modification directly or indirectly led to the failure, they cannot get out of their warranty obligation.

I cannot see why someone would choose an iphone over the n95 given the n95 does everything the iphone does and a whole lot more.

i can not fathom for the life of me peoples obsession with buying things off certain companies, dont get me wrong ive got an Ipod it changed a generation of MP3 players.

But the mac unless ur a graphic designer is useless, and far overpriced, and this phone looks the same, way overpiced.
