  When you say portable do you mean cordless as in each having its own re-charging station? If so I wouldn't of thought you need low self-discharge type or would benefit from them but could still use them. As a general rule with cordless phones you would use the same type as previously fitted but could go for increased capacity. Most common I think is NiMh type I believe. Sometimes where the batteries fit they describe what batteries should be used.

  We got some from the poundshop at 2 for a quid to try and they have actually been quite good, the Mrs can talk for well over an hour on the phone and they have no problem handling it.
