  Waves are difficult in a canoe/ kayak. If you get side on chances are you will capsize. In my experience you're best to take the waves head on, that way your kayak will go through the wave and stay steady.
  Oh and never ever go without a bouyancy aid. May be obvious to most, but you don't want to be stranded with a broken kayak and having to tread water in the sea.
  You've probably thought of this too, but put all your equipment in waterproof bags/ containers.

  The tidal current in the Solent is not very nice!
  
  I would seriously suggest you ask the coastguard for some local advice before arranging this trip.
  
  (And they will need to know where to look if they need to rescue you.)

  yea the solent does get pretty rough, I'd tell the coastguard of your intentions first, and pick the calmest day you can.
  Might be easier to ferry accross to Isle of Wright and attempt it from that side.
  
  River and estuary currents are very different from those found in the open ocean, definatley wear a lifejacket...

  I kayak sometimes, just make sure you're confident enough to do the distance without wearing yourself out. Take stuff for emergencies in waterproof bags, food/drink/mobile phone. The waves may get quite choppy so practice somewhere first with choppy waves and strong currents so you get a feel for it.
  
  Can't think of much else other than lifejacket obviously.
