They'll never find your mail,I saw it on tv once tons of undelivered parcels and items that have come loose, don't know what happens to them in long run....
Speak to seller, ask if they got certificate of postage and will do a claim for loss for you.Keep packaging too.

similar thing happened here the other week, I contacted royal mail, and heres the reply -
basically - ITS LOST!

Thank you for your email regarding an item of mail that was delivered withthe contents missing. May I firstly apologise for any inconvenience youhave been caused. Our priority is to provide a good quality service and we aim to handle allmail very carefully to make sure that it is delivered safely and on time.Every item of mail is important to us, but problems do arise. Damage can happen for a number of reasons. The most common is when lettersbecome trapped in our high-speed sorting machines. We try to remove Itemsthat are too big or contain bulky items like keys or coins before they getinto the sorting machines, but sometimes one may be missed. These can endup jamming the machine, which results in it getting damaged and alsodamaging other items. Unfortunately, we do not track First-class, Second-class post or StandardParcels, because of the large number of items that we handle every day. Asa result, I cannot say where or when the contents of your item were lost. This also applies to Recorded items, as they are only tracked once theyhave been delivered and signed for. We are not able to process claims by email for damaged items of mail due tothe specialised investigation required. Please submit a P58 Inland Lost, Damaged or Delayed form. These areavailable from any Post Office or alternatively you can download this usingthe following link; http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/customerservices?catId=400144&pageId=cs_claimform&csd=loss Please ensure you enclose your Certificate of Posting and any relevantdocumentation relating to your claim. I am sorry that my reply cannot be more favourable however; if you requireany further advice about the services we provide, please do not hesitate tocontact us. Regards

not necessarily - if you describe the item missing - where it was sent from and to - they can check it's route and find what sorting/distribution centre it went through and if it got stuck in the machine they will have it recorded - if it is thin it may have gone into the insides of the machinery and then it may not be found until they do a service on it - which may be years down the line - but if you dont ask you wont get !
