Hi, I'm after a new laptop and have a budget of £1,000, but the problem I am having is that I can't decide what to get. I'm after something that I can play games on (though i doubt i'll get anything powerful enought to run GTA IV :( ), as well as the usual watching films, surfing etc.

I like the look of the following:

Acer Aspire 6935G £919.97
Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26 GHz - 3MB Cache, 1066Ghz Bus
4 GB (2 x 2GB) 4 GB (max) - DDR3 SDRAM 1066
Hard Drive - 320 GB - 7200 RPM
Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit
Screen - 16 in TFT active matrix 1366 x 768 24-bit (16.7 million colours)
Optical Drive - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM / BD-ROM
Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT VRAM

Dell Studio XPS 16 £848.99
Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.00Ghz, 2MB, 800MHz)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1 - English
16" (inch) Truelife 720p HD WLED Edge to Edge Display
3072MB 1067MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [1x2048 + 1x1024]
320GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM) Hard Drive
512MB ATI® Radeon HD 3670 graphics card
Internal DVD+/-RW
Primary 6-cell 56 WHr Lithium Ion battery

Rock Pegasus 520 £999
Intel Core 2 Duo T5900, 2.2GHz
Nvidia Geforce 9650M GT 1Gb Graphics
Hi-res WSXGA+ 15.4" Screen
4GB DDR2 800MHz
500GB 5400rpm SATA HDD
8x Dual Layer +/- DVD-RW
Windows Vista Home Premium

Asus Laptop G50V-EP048C £962.55
Intel® Core2 Duo P8400 (2.26GHz),
15.6" WXGA (1280x800, Colour-Shine), Web Camera 1.3M,
NVIDIA® GeForce® 9700M GT 512MB
320GB (5400rpm),
4096MB (2048x2) DDRII 800,
Blu-Ray Combo
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium

There are others I have seen, but its all too confusing! I would've liked to have got something with a 9800GT gfx card, but most seem to come with the geforce 9600m GT or an ati 3450. I have also seen a couple with the Geforce 7950, which i've not heard a lot about to be honest. A blu-ray drive seems to be a bonus on some systems, but its not a deal breaker for me to be honest....

Also, i have had 5 dell's in the past, as it seems a sfae option to go for bigger company. but it looks like i'll get more for my money by going for the rock, or Asus but i'm not sure about these companies. I've had bad stuff about acer, but have also heard that they've been getting better.

From the above, what do people think is the best choice? or does anyone have any other suggestions that'd fit the bill? I dont know too much about what processor is the best from the above too, which i guess doesnt help me!

Thanks to anyone who spares the time to help out!

Forget a gaming pc - mugs game. Read your own words - you're planning £1k and that still wont play GTA4 !!

Get an xbox 360/PS3 which is guaranteed to play all past, present and future games.
Then go spend the other £800 you have left over on something else...

i've already got 360 and a ps3..

I need a new laptop, and i'm not buying one just to play games on it...its something that i dont mind paying extra for. seeing as i have enough money i may as well get one that'll let me play games as and when i want it to.....

I'd probably go for the Dell on the basis that neither Acer nor Asus are exactly top of the market brands and I've never heard of Rock!

You might find something around the £1,000 mark at www.novatech.co.uk. My experience is that they're well built laptops at reasonably competitive prices. Generally, their customer service is very good particularly if you live near one of their shops.

You looked at the fujitsu siemens offerings? I havnt but about 3 1/2 years ago i got me a Amilo M3438g, had nice processor, not bad ram and a Go 6800, 17" screen. PLayed all the games i could think of (and prob plays some still) only was £800

For a grand you could get a fantastic destop for gaming and a really good laptop for out and about and remember if your paying that much for a lappy make sure you include three years warranty in the price,You dont want to throw away a £1000 piece of kit after 13 months

Plus the fact that if you plan to use the lappy for gaming while out and about, don't expect a long run with battery power.
Also tossing £1,000 out of the upstairs window will depreciate slower than a laptop.

Go for Rock, the rest is not in the same league. It has 3 - year warranty as a standard.
