Ok, this is particularly relevent for RyanAir - looking for flights for two of us to germany - card fees were £19! rip off. Now, both RyanAir and EasyJet offer no fees if you pay by visa electron. All good, but no-one has Visa Electron cards!

Well, the post office offer a pre-pay visa electron 'travel card'. You can apply online (didn't work for me) and get £1.55 quidco, or get it in your local post office if you need it quickly. Minimum top up is £50, they charge you 1.5% for a sterling card, minimum £3.

Once the card is activated (takes 24 hours), you can use it to get fee-free flights with RyanAir. You just have to make sure you've 'topped it up' beforehand. I've just used it for £90 and can confirm it works

Halifax do Visa Electron.

If they charge you 1.5% to top up the card, where's the saving over paying a 1.5% fee to the airline?

coz the airlines charge £10 (or as OP says £19) rather than 1.5%

Hi, this was "borrowed" from an Irish consumer site. I have an entropay card, as it can hide money, the tax man doesn't know where it goes!

Entropay are Visa cards, but many websites Ryanair included read them as Visa Electron.

Sign up for EntroPay but make sure that your chosen account currency is GBP (This is because your card will not be recognised as a Visa Electron if you choose EUR). Postal code is required so type in EIRE or some random postal code.
Use your regular credit card to fund the account.
Activate the account using the activation email that they send you.
You will need to load at least €10 on to the account from your existing credit card, they also take a 4.95% commision, so it will cost €10.50.

Hopes this helps

i got one from halifax just ask.

i'm with HSBC and they don't offer an electron card, signing up to a new bank account (running multiples) can affect your credit rating and is a lot of hassle for cheaper flights!

Indeed, and quite easy to get as you can apply online. I use my halifax account and electron card solely for bookings with ryanair.

So if there are fees of about 5%, what's the point, or am i missing something?

The Co-op bank do one. I got mine last year after asking in my branch. They guessed it was for RyanAir. They completed the form for me and I just signed although they treated it like an application for credit. The card turned up in 2 weeks.

this is a little quicker than that too - i applied in-shop yesterday afternoon and used my card thismorning. might be useful to some people!

1p flight from Ryanair .... BUT £4.75 fee for using a "normal" card.:x

That's slightly more than 5% :whistling:

Yes, but 5% is definitely more than the 1.5% form the OP (or the 0% when getting an electron card):p

I got the Post Office Travel Money card for the same reason. I used branch code 1524054 when prompted and had no problems. I think it's a Royal Mail staff discount code.

Ps The Post Office Credit card was great when I used it abroad. It doesn't charge a commission like nearly all other credit cards do (even Nationwide charge now). Be careful IF YOU WITHDRAW MONEY FROM A CASH MACHINE ATM WHEN ABROAD YOU WILL BE CHARGED A CASH ADVANCEMENT FEE. Again I applied online and used the code '1524054' when prompted for a branch code. Card arrived in about a week. Happy Holiday:-D

I believe Ryanair are starting charging for electron cards from today. I also have a post office one which i purchased for the very reason of booking flights. All good things must come to an end i guess :-(
