I just cant believe the British public are standing for this.

Then again, I seriously doubt this would ever get through parliament.
A massive government database holding details of every phone call, e-mail and time spent on the internet by the public is being planned as part of the fight against crime and terrorism. Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecoms companies would hand over the records to the Home Office under plans put forward by officials.
The information would be held for at least 12 months and the police and security services would be able to access it if given permission from the courts

I have to agree with earlier post....this will already be happening

you have to remember that if the powers that be think this is a necessary system you wouldn't know about it as it would be under official secrets act....

Yea chances are we'll recieve a slimmed down version of it.

However, my mate lives and works in london, and since 7/7 has a always been a bit scared of getting the tube. But last week he had to get it, so went to the station, got on etc. His girlfriend knew of his fear so jokingly text him 'the guy next to you with the rucksack has a bomb'. Stupid I know, but harmless fun, right? Wrong.
For the next 3 days neither of their mobile phones worked, nor did any store cards, credit cards or debit cards.
Coinsidence?

Yes but thats not the point, its more the principal that we are being spied on....
The actual content of my communications I don't care about, its just the feeling I'm being watched that bothers me
#10
yea most people will have nothing to worry about, but its the freedom of privacy which is the biggest loss.
If we had 9 o'clock curfews to stop 'gang culture' would you still be saying 'its ok if you've got nothing to hide'.
Its also the hypocricy that annoys me, why is all of our infomation, personal phone calls and DNA subject to searching, when the MP's and those in power get all arsey when their expences are under investigation.

It wouldnt be so bad if we could have even a semblance of trust that the data wouldnt get into the wrong hands..............

After the recent loss of personal data etc by most government departments (and thats just the ones that have leaked out), would you really want every piece of electronic communication you have made in the last 12 months being lost to God knows who?

They don't read your personal emails, texts or listern to your calls...

If you use certain words or phrases you will be monitored...

If you join or are a member of certain groups, you will be monitored...

It makes it safer for all of us...

They have them all recorded and 'can' do what they want with them.... I'm sure they won't read most peoples as there will be no need but the point is they CAN!
What happens if I am discussing certain subjects eg another terrorist bombing on the news.... certain words will be picked up, someone will more likely then scan through what I have said....

Sorry....but I should be free to say whatever I want without people monitoring what I am saying

Sooner or later they will move the bar.... it will be people admitting they 'did X' crime to their mates and getting arrested...... then it will be someone saying they were driving drunk.... then someone saying ' oh my MOT has run out'....

If we let it go now, in years to come we will regret it

You can say what you like and talk about what you like...

Consider yourself lucky your having the chance to discuss the procedure...

What happend to the 'victims' liberty and civil-human rights?

If this comes in then this opens the door to 1001 other things
If this comes in we lose the right to privacy
If this comes in then whats next
If this comes in we lose civil liberty

If we lose civil liberty everything this country holds dear is lost and they have already won

What we need is better powers to cope with these problems eg why did the police not arrest hate preachers straight away? Why did the government wait until that Bakri guy went out of the country and not allowing him back in when they could have kicked him out long before?

Because people like you keep saying no to the extra powers the security services require...

They will get the powers because of the changed situation around the world...

You won't know about it...

At the end of the day...

They won't be interested in a person who never goes out and spends all their time on internet forums...

Maybe one day you will realise...

They have already been monitoring all emails and text messages for years I can't remember the name but they scan for key words.

When people say "you don't have to worry if you have nothing to hide" it's the worst kind of apathy. What if the goalposts are moved on what the state believes to be acceptable and an ultra right wing government starts targeting minorities or those it deems to be members of a terrorist organization such as peta or green peace.

Just google mccarthy hearings and say that this kind of thing doesn't happen in the west.

thats just being ignorant if you dont mind me saying. So if you mention to a mate on the phone that "I got bombed last night at the party", then its ok to be monitored?

Try watching TAKING LIBERTIES http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0977667/

it will astound you what rights we British have lost in the last 10 years.

you can see it on youtube

i wonder if you'll be saying that in a few years when your moaning about the govt increasing taxes to your mate on the phone then a few days later your arrested under some convaluted jumped up terrorist charge and convicted as a political agitator or enemy of the state.

not a great leap forward when this govt gets pensioners held under anti terrorists charges for the crime of heckling at its party conference.

You have been warned.

It's been a well known secret for many years now that the system is in place, and is monitoring our communications. Perhaps they just want to legalise it now.

'They won't be interested in a person who never goes out and spends all their time on internet forums...'
You have just slagged off half the people on this site!
Actually I think they should have a lot more powers than they already have, but to Monitor EVERYONE is going too far
According to your way of doing things then, the vast majority of people who own XBOX & PS3 could be monitored too....due to 'bombing' the base on CoD4.....Sounds silly but there have been talks of terrorist groups on it...never met them myself
Where does the line stop?

The line stops wherever the Public wants to stop it.

Problem is, most the population are idiots and are happy to surrender their rights for no reason whatsoever.
Their apathy allows the Governemnt to do watever it wants.
Then theres some people that come out and argue that its all ok, and the government is just doing what it needs to, to keep us safe. These are the most dangerous people as they do not have a clue, yet talk like they do to convince others. These people see no wrong in the government's actions, and anyone with a brain can see the government dont do things for the good of the people anymore, its out of self-interest and controlling the population as easily they can, which is easier if they have every bit of information they can find about you.

Quicker Scotland breaks away from the Shambles that is the UK the better.
Its guaranteed we would laugh this out of our Parliament like we want to do with ID cards, storing innocent peoples DNA (illegal in Scotland) and etc.

Next we'll all have to wear microphones and the Goverment will employ thousands of people to listen in and report, wasting, as usual, millions

Actually....they could. The CIA got a billed passed so they could listen into 'terrorist' conversations thru the mic on your phone. Even if it was off. It guess it wouldnt be practical on a large scale, but its a scary thought.
