Without a doubt the best ones for this price range are the Harman Kardon Soundsticks III. Check out the reviews, they're well worth the money.

i have checked out the reviews for the soundsticks and am aware they are on offer for £99 atm.
my housemate has them and the sound is very good, however another housemate has the bose companion 3's.
the bose are much better but out of my price range. the soundsticks also lack in volume with less than 50watts rms.
I have decided to go with some Aego M's 2.1 - http://www.trustedreviews.com/Acoustic-Energy-Aego-M-Speakers_Peripheral_review
i got them fairly cheap and should hopefully arrive in the next few days. i will comment on how well they perform after testing them.

thanks everyone for you input :)
