Hi, have a bit of a problem with my dad's new laptop and wondered if anybody could help me....(its a bit long, sorry :) )

Ok so it's probably something and nothing but I'm not very technical. Basically, since buying the laptop, an Acer Aspire 5520, he's been connected to the internet using wifi (virgin media), via a NETGEAR router. My sister has also been connected to the internet using the router but with an ethernet cable as her computer does not have wifi.
About 10 days ago, the internet stopped working on the laptop. A few days later it stopped working on the computer. They have since plugged the ethernet cable directly into the modem,(for the computer) and this is working fine. The laptop however will not work on the internet using this method. My initial thought was perhaps the router is not working properly? But it says that the signal and connection etc are excellent? :S
When I try to open the homepage it says: " windows cannot find host name "www.msn.com" using DNS." I try loading another page, which loads up as address invalid and in the address bar says "http://"
My dad has rang VM who says its a fault with the laptop, network adapter? I went into device manager which said that all devices were working properly. Surely it would show there if a driver was corrupt?
Today I restored the laptop back to factory settings to see if this would resolve the problem, but it hasn't.
On diagnosing network problems (i think thats what it is) it says "the network adapter "wireless network connection" is not connected" but it is........i think?
Don't really want to have to ring VM again to pay 25p a min to talk to somebody else who sounds like they have less of an idea what they are doing than what I have....so would really appreciate any help anybody can give me!!!

It sounds as though the laptop & PC are trying to use the same IP Address.

Try the following:

On both the PC and the laptop click on 'Start', then right-click on 'My Network Place's & select 'Properties'.

Right-click on the network connection. In the box with all the items listed, highlight 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' & click on 'Properties'.

Make sure 'Obtain an IP Address Automatically' is selected. Click on 'OK', & then reboot the PC & the laptop.

Hopefully all should now be OK.

If not you may need to set the properties in the router to allocate IP addresses automatically, but we can talk you through that.

Hi, thanks for your help, will try it.
Just one thing, sorry if this sounds dumb but....have tried accessing the internet on laptop without the pc being plugged in, with still no success.
And also previous to buying this new laptop the old laptop was connected at the same time as the pc via the router for about 3 months with no problems. Would the IP address not be the same as they are both running through the same modem?
I am totally clueless as you can probably tell!

did you try a simple. repair the connection? just right click on the lil wireless thing in bottom right corner and click repair. sounds silly but it's sorted things for me a couple of times

Hey, yeh I did do that...thanks. Can manage things like that just about :) It originally said "microsoft cannot repair the problem" and to "contact your internet service provider".

Cis_groupie... have done the above and "obtain Ip address automatically" was already checked. My dad tried connecting to the internet again and it has started working! Have no idea what happened :S but thank you for your help!

Rep given to you both

I assume that saying as you've disconnected the ethernet cable from the router it has been powered down and then restarted?

If not, make sure and give that a try, it happens to me quite often.

As for the laptop not working via ethernet it's probably just that the network connection hasn't been set up. The ethernet card is different from the wireless, they need set up seperately.

Ok, i done everything stated in the first post and the internet was working fine for about 2 days, on both pc and laptop. It then stopped working again. Have had the router & modem changed for new ones and still have a problem. Am getting the "windows cannot find host name using DNS" message again. The laptop works fine running through the modem without the router, as does the pc. But i need them both to be connected to the internet at the same time, which is the reason the router was bought. Please please can anybody help?
Thanks very much in advance!
Rep will be given to all who can solve my problem :)

try changing the channel that the router works on.
Usually channels 6 and 11 work best.

by channel, I mean the frequency, not the port.
You would need to go into the gateway of the manufacturer to do this.

ok...any tips on how to do this? Was beginning to think its a prob with the wifi on laptop but the internet wont work if the pc is connected via the router as well.
Also first poster said about setting router to automatically obtain ip address, how would I do this?

Please let us know some more details, ISP ? Make of Router ?
Sounds like you need to change the channel. Do you have the instructions ?
you need to go to the address bar of your browser and type in the IP address belonging to the router manufacturer.
Username and Password is usually Admin and Admin
then navigate to the wireless settings and change the channel.

Hope this helps.

I'm not convinced that the channel is the problem but when accessing your router the ip address should be something like 192.168.0.2 but google the make and model of your router and you should find the exact one.

If you change the channel there you will also have to change it on your wireless card unless it is set up to auto detect channel.
