Why wouldn't you? I nearly ballsed it up last time a new £20 came in. I'd rather get rid of them as soon as I can rather than have it hanging over me.

they are only going out if circulation, they remain legal tender with bank of England, eventually most shops will stop taking them but you can always take them to bank of England, you might have to go to the London branch but they are still OK.

Well, I didn't know that! Thanks. Perhaps it's not as bigger deal as I thought. Still, I don't fancy a trip to London to get rid of a fiver :)

I know that feeling. I didn't want to lose my life savings with the demise of a single note.

You can put old notes into your bank account even when they are no longer legal tender. I found an old twenty pound note a few months ago in the drawer, which had been withdrawn a few years ago. Luckily natwest was fine accepting it :3

Don't Panic !! The phasing out will be over a period of many months - they won't suddenly be "illegal tender" overnight . Apart maybe for MSK's dodgy fivers! Its a dead giveaway in the small print on them ( I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of £4.50 ) oO

In 100 years time you will still be able to cash them in with the Bank of England. ;)

What do I need to do?

Nothing. Once The New Fiver has entered circulation we will gradually start withdrawing paper £5 notes as they are banked by retailers and businesses. If, after May 2017, you find you still have some paper £5 notes you will be able to exchange them at the Bank of England. But until then carry on spending paper £5 notes as usual.

Just take a tip form eddie hitler, when the fivers expire tape porno images over the queen to distract cashiers while you leg it with your shopping.

No really, it wasn't. I wasn't aware there was a later date for swapping them. I was attempting to be helpful, but thank you for that unnecessary judgement. If you're going to judge me for something, make it ignorance, not scaremongering.

At least I've learnt something through this thread :)
