20MB Internet only at 5-6MB ?

Mum spoke to sky to upgrade her connection to 20MB, but was told she already had 20MB. I did a speed test for her but it only ever reach's 6MB max ? The house is 1.8 miles from the exchange, surely it isn't a 20mb connection ?

Virgin or Other?

ADSL or DSL?
I'm guessing ADSL. Seems around right, scamming their customers with their 'upto's'

My 20 meg connection here with O2:

Our exchange is literally down the road.

Sky have to use the BT lines and we were told that BT get priority.
Ours is very slow - should be 20mb but more like 1mb.

Ignore me, must read properly, Sky.

Only people literally righ next to the exchange will get anything close to 20MB. Over distance the speed drops. 1.6 miles is a considerable distance. Also, how old is the house and wiring? Old and poor wiring will slow things down, also look for broken microfilters.

The two big words in the contract are UP and TO - rippoff Britain at it's best.

At least it's better than the one at work:

House isn't too old, maybe 60- 70's build, hard to say really

If it's at work, they've probably throttled the speed right down to prevent gaming/downloading/videos etc.

We share the line with 40 other businesses - I think that may have something to do with it. :-D

speedtest wont be accurate, it depends on different factors such as concurrent isp subscribers, distance between you and the test server, busy times of day for your isp, distance fro the exchange, number of users going through your exchange ..... the list goes on & on. call your isp and ask them to run a speedtest for you, but you still won't get 20mb. if you want closer to the advertised (upto) speed from your isp you shoul switch to a cable or FO line.

i live 40 metres from the BT exchange and via O2 i get 16 /17MB it did use to be 19/20MB, don't know what has happened but there has been a decrease. Furthermore, their DNS servers are crap at the moment I am getting a faster response time from my Huawei E272 dongle on Three and Vodafone. Figure that one. There must be some contention round here for the network.

Those on O2 or Be should use http://download.bethere.co.uk/ to test the speed as it gives a more accurate result than speedtest.net

I'm well impressed with Orange, I only pay for a 2MB/s connection.

Sky are rubbish that's why.

I had Sky up to 16mb, only got about 6mb. Switched to O2, same line everything, now get 15mb on an up to 20mb line.

I'm with sky and this is my results, they have just upped my costs last month 'cus the usage was over 10MB per month or something, but this looks insanely bad compaired to others above...should I ring them?

This is my 10Mb service from Virgin - always about this sort of speed. Love it!

8 meg, o2

If you look at the router settings it will tell you what speed the connection is set at, I was paying o2 for 20meg and checked my router, they were only sending me 8 ! suffice to say I got a refund etc etc

I'll look into this, I thought that even with the 'up to' clause 14MB down on 20 seems drastic, I suspect it could be 8, but from the looks of it 8 should be at 3-4. My 10MB virgin media connection, no idea why it's so slow, usually at 9.5MB+ until the fair usage comes in (10MB connection)

Always pings badly though, by my standards anyway, not so bad in England, but when i'm gaming with americans
can be a real problem with lag
