Both DS and 3DS games will work. With the exception of Xenoblade.

You do need a memory card as well - 8GB should be enough unless you plan on downloading games in which case you might well want bigger. I don't know if there's a limit on what size card the console can take though so you might want to investigate that first

Yes, it is a game that will only run on the 'new' 3DS. Only get a memory card if you plan to use the online eshop.

A 2ds will play standard 3ds games. These are titles that say Nintendo 3ds on the box. While the most recent "new 3ds" will have that written on the box art. I've shared 2 photos to show as examples.

Well I was about to make myself sound silly saying how can you expect a 2ds console to play 3ds games.

Turns out it can.

New 3ds titles will not play on a 2ds console.

It's really down to how you're going to build your library. Going digital or going cartridge.

Digital you'll need a decent sized sd card (unsure if it's micro or standard).

going cartridge will buy 3ds games only like luigi's mansion 2 spongebob do you know what is the best memory card to get will want a 32g but want about make?

Forgot to add, standard DS games also work on the 2ds.

^sd card information from nintendo. If you aren't downloading you don't need a large sd card.

I'd say 8gb-16gb just incase you do decide to download a title (usually less than a gig for most games) or there's a patch on a title. I believe most games saves to the cartridge, while a few save to the system.

Graphics won't change from a ds game to 2ds console.

But most handheld titles are about the gameplay and story as the units power isn't as compatible to a hole console.

so is there a differance if i played a 3ds game or a ds game on the 2ds

so is there a differance if i played a 3ds game or a ds game on the 2ds

The main difference is

Nintendo DS:

Original Version of the Nintendo DS hardware the successor to the Gameboy Advance

It is a hinged console with Dual Screens the lower of which is touch, it came in 3 varieties of the Original, DS Lite & DSi (the DSi was more powerful with a camera and lost the inclusion of a Gameboy Cart Slot) there was also a DSi XL which was a larger in size variation

Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS was the successor to the Nintendo DS/DSlite/DSi/DSi XL,

The 3DS was backwards compatible with original Nintendo DS Games, The 3DS has the same Dual Screens, with the bottom being touch, but added a 3D top screen and analogue thumb stick for controls. And XL version also available.

Nintendo 2DS

The 2DS is basically the 3DS but.. with the 3D screen ability removed and presented in a tablet like form factor, the intention was for younger kids to have the 3DS without the 3D and adding durability. Again backwards compatible with the original Nintendo DS

Nintendo ‘New’ 3DS

The most confusing naming of any product. The New 3DS available in both standard and XL versions, is basically a more powerful 3DS, it features a better 3D top screen with eye tracking to improve the 3D feature, dual analogue thumb sticks ZR & ZL buttons and a more powerful Processor.

The better processor means some games are exclusive to this console, and also SNES titles are available from the eShop.

"Super Mario World", "F-Zero", & "Pilotwings" from the Nintendo eShop are also exclusive to the New Nintendo 3DS.

To add to haritori's summary:

Game Boy Advance Game Cartridges could be used within the Nintendo DS & DS Lite.
The cartridge slot was removed from the Nintendo DSi model onwards.

No differences. A 3ds console has the ability to add depth 3d to the top screen.

You have the ability to turn it on or off on that console with a slider level.

The 2ds is the same console strength as the 3ds, just not in a clam shell body (hinge), and does not play games in 3d depth.

Will play the exactly same games as a 3ds, and ds (minus the gba cartridge slot).

2DS is part of the 3DS family.
2DS doesn't display stereoscopic 3D like the 3DS does, hence the 2D in its name.

They come with a memory card already inside them. 2GB I think.
But you don't need that for saving your game progress for cartridge games, as they save directly to the cartridge.
