3 million 20-34 year olds live with their parents.

kylewalkerkylewalker

Almost 3 million people aged 20-34 were living with their parents in 2011, a 20% increase on the number in 1997, official figures show.

The data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows that while in 1997 one in four men and one in seven women aged 20-34 lived at home, by 2011 the proportions had increased to one in three men and one in six women.

good point, would a girlfriend/boyfriend living with their parents at around 30 put you off them?

would like to see the percentage used, probably 90% used aged 20, i can understand shock horror at the later years, but at 20 most are still in full time education, and where should they be living at 20

    Don't blame them.

Not necessarily people who are single/never owned a house.

It includes the boomarang generation, early 30 somethings that have lived with partners had mortgages, it hasn't worked out, sold house, returned home.

Myself and my partner are living back at my mum and dads, to help out with childcare and save for a deposit.

    It says
In 2011, 64% of men and 46% of women aged 20 were living with their parents, while only 7% of 34-year-old males and 2% of 34-year-old females remained in the family home
so I am actually quite surprised that less than half the 20 year old women were still at home. I would have thought that more would be.

Relationship breakdowns, cost of living alone, I’m not surprised really. Cost of rent for a 1 bed basic flat in outer London (not even central London!) starting from £800pcm, add another £200 for bills, another £160 for travelcard and you are looking roughly at the guts of £1200 before you’ve even had time to think about food, entertainment, saving, hobbies, going out, holidays etc.

Shocking thing is this is gonna get worse and whats gonna have to the majority of relationships ? ill tell ya, coz they are living at home when the woman ends up getting pregnant then theyl be moving into houses that are paid for thus making this country even more hard up

Not surprising considering how difficult it is for first time buyers to save up for a deposit for a house. Especially if they have student loans to repay after finishing university with little prospect of getting a job in the field they studied. Hard times.

The problem is many have already mortgaged themselves to education fees and car insurance payments and there is nothing decent left for a property mortgage.

    Cant blame them really

The reason why so many stay at home is any spare housing has been leeched by foreigners coming to our shores who then get those staying at home to pay for it through taxation and benefits.

I left home at 16, don't want mine moving out so young, but i coped well, had Boyfriend, full time job and we had a mortgage, my name was on the deeds through solicitor but i was too young to go on the financial side of things! Worse thing i did was go to solicitor and get him to tear up that contract we had made, leaving the whole £45k new build home to my ex!! Should of stuck it out and got half the equity when he sold it on 2 yrs later for £75k
