3 red lights of doom xbox 360

most xboxers will know what i mean by the "3 red lights of doom"

it happened to my lads last night, microsoft are now offering a repair and free postage etc even for second hand ones, but being a typical 15 year old who had only registered his 12 month xbox live thingy (£19-99 on the littlewoods deal couple of weeks ago thanks to op) on monday, he wanted it to work there and then, i googles the problem and found what i thought was a wind up, but for the sake of peace n quiet decided to give it a go, you have to turn the xbox on wrap it tightly in two towels so no air goes in or out basically overheating it :? can just hear some of you thinking the womans a lunatic, dont worry i thought i was as well but a normally stroppy 15 year old whose world has fallen apart due to the damn 3 red lights. drives any sense of normaillity out the door)

any way back to my impending lunacy ... i wrapped the xbox nice and tightly in 2 of my best bath sheets making sure it was nice an snug :whistling: and left it for 25 minutes, then unwrapped it turned it off left it for 15 more minutes to cool down, then with much trepidation not in case it didnt work but in case son combusted if it hadn't, swallowed hard pressed the button and hey presto nothing ...... then yay no red lights just lots of lovely green ones, a contented purring son who proceeded to try an slobber all over my cheek, dont know how long its going to work for but had a blazing row with afore mentioned son when i caught him sound off, head poking out of the bottom of the quilt still playing it at 2am grrrrrrrrrrrrr
hope it helps someone

[U but please be carefull and dont go off an leave it wrapped an plugged in slightest smell of anything odd turn the socket off

I think it has something to do with soldered connections. Overheating may cause some of them to melt down a bit, the cooling solidifies them.
#2
yes thats what i could make out from all the stuff i read afterwards just couldnt believe it acctually worked
#3
I wouldn't advise this.

Why do this and not simply get one that is up to par?
#4
have you ever had a stroppy 15 year old throwing a wobbly when microsofts customer services are shut for the evening ? I fully intend to get the repair or exchange honoured just couldnt stand the stress of door slamming and huffing after a day of teaching other peoples monsters :)

That's a pretty specific quiestion. :?

How are you going to get it exchanged if ther's nothing wrong with it?
#6
because you explain to the nice person a microsoft that the problem is intermitent and as they have now admitted the problem exists hey presto :)
link to their letter
http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/support/petermooreletter.htm
#7
The link provided does not say that they will exchange one that a customer tells them has an intermittent problem, but working when returned to Microsoft.

I don't doubt your word, but it would be nice to see this in black & white
#8
quick q saint have you decided to follow posts i make today nit picking or is everyone afforded the same courtesy ?
#9
Everyone is afforded the same courtesy.

Couldn't find a link then?
#10
This is only a temporary fix and next time it is usually 1 red light which you cant get fixed for free if your out of 12 month warranty, happened to me.
#11
didnt bother to look for one saint, as their word in the letter which doesnt specify one particular fault is good enough for me, i dont hink they are going to go back on something they have posted on their sites internationally

As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge—including shipping—for three years from the console’s purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. In doing so, Microsoft stands behind its products and takes responsibility to ensure that every Xbox 360 console owner continues to have a fantastic gaming experience.
#12
odriscoll although the letter states the 3 red lights problem it also says

If we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize. We are taking responsibility and are making these changes to ensure that every Xbox 360 owner continues to have a great experience.

i dont know if you could challenge them in respect of the one red light might be worth a call just on the off chance

The point I am trying to make is this:

You will be returning a working Xbox360.

What is to stop you waiting 2 years and 364 days and returning a Xbox360 in return for a new one?
#14
and my point earlier is that i WILL explain that the fault is intermitent, and i shall be sure to let you know if the problem is resolved, one thing i have learnt today however is that when you try to help with a "quick fix" however temporary, is dont bother as someone will always want to pick holes, after seeing some of the posts people receive i'm sometimes amazed that people continue to bother.
#15
I don't think any of my questions were unreasonable. If you only welcome posts that agree with you, edit your original post to show this.

I shall then delete my posts.

We will both be happy. :)

The warranty on ALL Xbox 360s has been extended to 3 years as of this year to get a repair or exchange. I've done it, I know plenty of people at work and friends that have, its no big deal.

If this is directed towards me, that's not what I am questioning. :?

woah cat fight lol.
but yeah honestly i would of just sent it in with the 3 red lights instead of a quick home repair. ive also heard of it goin to one red flashin light after which i dont think microsoft pay for. Next time id just tell your son to go revise or something.
#19
i paid 24 pound for 2 year accidental damage with game and i can take my xbox in and get a replacement in minutes. anyone that lives close etc i would change one for them no worries....cant do it to much less they might ask q's i think?
#20
like i said in the original post, "can just hear some of you thinking the womans a lunatic, dont worry i thought i was as well" i think that rather opens it to people having their own opinions dont you, i just dont expect to get comments like
"The link provided does not say that they will exchange one that a customer tells them has an intermittent problem, but working when returned to Microsoft.
I don't doubt your word, but it would be nice to see this in black & white"
to me thats a bit like saying dont take a pair of supposedly watertight shoes that leak back when its not raining because the trader wont believe you
#21
lol mclovin he had already done 3 hours revision and all his homework, i'm fortunate to have 4 pretty good kids like that, apart from catching him under the covers playing the damn thing at 2am
#22
oh dear taz can see you being bombarded now, lol nice offer though :)

something my mother used to say 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all'
i have been to forums where you can actually ignore users and their posts do not appear when you browse. would be handy if such a thing was available here.
personally, i dont offend easily, i can ignore the posts that annoy. if someone says something you dont like just dont respond to it. Some people just like to provoke a response.

your advice traceym sounds very helpful, i will most likely try the same when my sons xbox 360 takes a wobbly, though, in almost 11 months its worked without a hitch so maybe i wont need to.

I believe that this is possible on HUKD.

1.Try going into 'User CP'.

2.Buddy/ignore list

3. Type in 'thesaint'

The point I am trying to make is this:

You will be returning a working Xbox360.

I agree with thesaint on this one. If you send a working Xbox back to MS they will either
1 - replace motherboard and return it.
2 - just return it and pretend they've fixed it
2 - return it and charge you postage costs for sending a working xbox.

If I were you, I'd wait until it failed again or make sure they understand its an intermittant fault....

I have just had mine returned yesterday(it took over 3 weeks). I was told when I sent it that if it was not a true 3 red light fault, then when it was tested on receipt, they would phone you and take a credit card payment of £60. No other fault is covered out of warranty.

£60 is the charge whatever the fault (other than 3 red lights).

And it took three weeks to send a replacement, not even my own repaired one.

Just a warning, any apparent support of my position(whether explicitly stated or implied) will immediately put you on many peoples' *hit list. ;-)

Thats ok, just glad to clear it up. Plus, having waited for as long as I did to get it mine back, the advice will prevent you getting it in the neck every day for up to a month from your son.:-D
