Needs.

No online play
no hdtv at the moment
no blu ray needed
no 18+ games

Currently has xbox gc psp ds laptop, bike, football etc!.
Mod for cheap games might be nice in future?

He has £125 and a £25 toys r us voucher. Id rather put the extra than have him waste his birthday money. What do we go for?

£189.99 360
£169.99 wii
?

I think 360's and PS3's better for boys or Wii's better for girls of that age, but thats just going on personal experience

360 or PS3 deffinately if he is well in to his consoles (my 12 year old lad hardly ever plays on the Wii)

Hmm.. The 360 games seem to be quite adult in nature.

For that reason I might have plumped for a Wii

The PS3 will have the longest production cycle and is the most reliable of the next generation consoles.

The Wii currently is popular and has cheap games but it is a now generation console and will be outdated very soon, the extra added and sometimes necessary gimmick add-ons are also expensive.

The Xbox 360 is popular partially down to the hacking ability, it doesn't have a good collection of game but is the most unreliable console currently on the market, a plus is the price point which currently has it costing less than a nintendo Wii and the abundance of cheap used games makes a good choice for a youngster.

I would recommend a PS3 because you wont have to buy another console for at least 6 years which would follow the cycle of the PS1 and PS2, second i would recommend the Xbox 360 but with a wired controller and third the Wii because his friends wont be getting this console and he will no doubt be wanting one of the other two to trade games with his pals.

the 360 doesnt have a good collection of games? Its the console with the largest library of games.

I think the wii is good fun but a bit gimmicky. I know 10 seems young but at that age I would have preferred an 360 or ps3 just because of quality of games. Even the sports ones like fifa and pro evo are much better on these consoles.

Yeah I'd say Wii too. I'm shocked at so many young boys/girls who aren't even in their teens and they play GOW and GTA

If he was new to gaming, I would say get the Wii as it is more accesable for a young kid/gaming novice.

However given his gaming history, I would say go for the Xbox 360.

IMHO both the PS3 and 360 are great machines and they both would do the job. But as he already has an xbox, he will be able to continue playing (some) of those games on the 360. Also, the prices of games are cheaper, so probably more suitable to a younger person's pocket.

You can't say which of the two (PS3/Xbox 360) will last the longest because in truth, with the advance of technology, they are both going to be superceeded within a few years.

My nephew has had a 360 since he was 10 and loves it. :)

I sold my 360 because my 4 year old was watching me play it too much and it had too much adult content. Him being a 10yr old, well, its the norm now for kids of that age to play hardcore games isn't it?

The PS3 has better games of a non graphic nature like:

Ratchet and clank
Motorstorm
Tekken (yeah i no its fighting but..)
PsStore and its various excellant kids games (super rub a dub, snakeball etc etc)

The Wii, well it can get boring very easy, i sold mine because it started collecting dust and i had it chipped with many games ahem! and it still didn't get used (also last generation graphics and the fact me m8 threw the controller through my HDTV lol! added to it being sold).

Its hard tbh, me i would probably go with the 360 with him being 10, im not one of these parents who would stop them playing GoW etc but the swearing on Rainbow 6 could be a problem.

Good pointer, do you let him watch action movies? movies rated over 15 etc? if so buy the 360 ;D

IMO, the Wii brings the whole family into gaming rather than separating them as most consoles have traditionally done. Just another thing to think about

( nacider, played Wii RE4 this morning on the Wii before my bro picks it up - pretty good improvement on the GC version, eh? Nearly had a heart attack at one point though!)

but do you wont the whole family down there pi**ing you off jumping up and down with a blooming wii just get a 360! £110 second hand well worth it.... 1yr warrenty so just take it back if it bugg ers

i would say a wii my borthers 11 and he loves it

Has your son expressed a preference for a Wii or Xbox? ie what does he want? what do his school mates have? If he has his heart set on one and you get him the other, he'll be dissappointed no matter how good the console, or how good the reasons are for getting him it (instead of the other)....
#28
my son is 10 and has about 20 game son his wii now - personally I think the wii is designed for kids or women as the games are not of an adult nature - I was the sad sod who went out in the middle of the night for the wii fit and he loves playing on that too - so I'd say go for the Wii he'll love it (and he is a real boy - loves playing out in the garden - climbing trees - so skip the comments about getting a ball etc - kids like to play inside sometimes too)
#29
My youngest boy, 11, has both a Wii and a 360, and very rarely plays on the Wii. I know you said that you dont want online, but if your sons friends have xbox live, then he'll be able to chat and play online with them, and won't be missing out on interaction with his mates.
