360 To Get Blu-Ray?

According to this, Micro$oft will try to upstage Apples big announcements tomorrow by announcing one hour before the Apple keynote, that the 360 will get BluRay before Christmas

http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/06/08/ms-to-release-blu-ray-drive-on-monday/

It'll be interesting because if they release games on bluray too, everyone will have too buy another xbox for newer games, shafting their current fanbase.

Or they could put it in a new case and rebrand it the xbox 720 and hope no-one will notice...

I can't see it myself, Blu-Ray is'nt doing paricularly well itself compared to DVD sales so it would really seem worthwhile from a business standpoint.

The reason..................blu rays are about £15 each

Look at hd dvds i bet when you compare them to dvd sales it will be not close but good in comparison due to the huge price drop --- if blu rays were the same price as dvd people wouldnt buy them as not many people have the facilities but by putting it on as many system as possible it will be better known and people will buy it eventually instead of dvd but i couldnt see that happening until at least 5 years from now

We did a survey before Xmas and the overall factor was that people were satisfied with their DVDs and did'nt feel the need to "upgrade" again so soon after VHS - DVD. We had some amazing offers to the trade on BR just before I left, but a lot of retailers just don't want to touch them because they feel theres more profit in DVD still.

Even if BRs were made £1 each still would'nt help unless you could get a BR burner and blank discs cheap :whistling:

In terms of sales I only have the figures for March which were, BR 9.8 of the share with HD-DVD taking 2.1, but even if HD-DVD sells millions now it wont matter as they have gone to clearance meaning sales figures wont count since they may be being sold at a loss to the distributer.

Bad news mate

Microsoft denies blu ray rumour

But then again its not like sony owns blu ray so they cant stop microsoft if they ever did decide to

Yes but your are surveying older people - what you wont understand that its us 18-25 year olds that are buying the blu rays or hd dvds --- older people have no interest in it --- they buy the hd tvs but then watch a standard source which is pointless

Obviously dvds are more profitable theyve been around since before 2000 and you can manufacture a disc for like 1p

Its not the cost of making the blu rays discs as you said its people having the equipment to actually play them and as i said this wont happen for at least 5 years when people understand what they are and tbh once that happens there will be a new format emerging so we will end up ditching blu ray for something else - hopefulyl films on mini hard drives - get rid of disks

I wonder if in an alternate reality are people discussing "PS3 To Get HD-DVD?".

DVD is becoming obsolete imho, I can't see us using them in 5 years. Flash memory would be my bet for the most common / popular removeable media in the near future.

They've already surpassed DVDs in capacity, all they have to do now is work on the transfer speeds and reliability... cost will drop in time as it always does and you'll no longer want to sit and burn a DVD when you can just transfer the file as many times as you like, not to mention the fact that USB ports on DVD players isn't exactly uncommon already.

Yeh flash cards or mini hard drives are the future - i think flash will be the next step considering you can get some 30gb sd cards and the size is increasing every month
Imo a format is dead when everyone in the world (most of it) have a format or type of thing
Everyone has dvd - they are given away in papers so it just shows they are dying - i think by 2010 dvd sales will have dropped but wont die out for a long time

I would think a format is very much alive if everyone has it and using it. DVD is a standard, set in stone the fact papers give them away shows how popular they are as they know people are likely to be able to use it.

Personally im not buying any more dvds that are over £5 unless its tv boxset - reason is its not worth it anymore - ive been watching dvds since i got lot fotr and since then dvd quality has increased a lot
Im sure im not alone in the thinking that hey i will just buy a new release in 2 months as it will be a fiver meaning that companies are realising that dvd release prices dont stick more more than a month or 2

Im not saying hey everyone buy a ps3 and blu ray as thats dumb - stick with dvds atm until blu ray players are like £50 as if im being truly honest i dont see blu ray lasting more than the lifespan of the ps3 till about 2013
Then the next step will be UHD - ultra high def but it wont be around to us lot till id say earliest 2015
Its already starting to roll out in japan on tv at 7,680 × 4,320 thats the future - remember high def atm is only 4 x better than dvd

Ive only been buying hd dvds as £5 for the extra quality is worth it

UHD is expensive atm but give it 8 years they will be available like hdtvs are now just a tad more costy but they need to work out how to squeeze all thoses pixels down to a 40inch tv

Its already starting to attrract attention from the news
