3D TV - Is it really worth it?

redditreddit

3D seems to be the thing that is being pushed hard by the industry but I'm wondering whether ultimately it is worth the longer term investment at the moment as I'm not convinced yet that we will see mainstream 3D TV for many a year yet.

HD channels alone are taking an age to become the norm, so am sceptical about 3D.

Are you a 3D user and what are your real world experiences?

I like it, but I would not pay pay much if any extra for a 3D tv as it is a technology that does not work for most people. If and until glassless 3D comes about it will probably not get the momentum it needs to develop the content.

It also has many vocal detractors and is possibly as "uncool" and apple is "cool". (_;)

    not impressed with it...
but then my eyes are not incredibly impressed with blu-ray over a good dvd! i'm still buying HD-DVD's as they are SOOOO cheep.

it IS a direction the industry is going to try and make us buy...
how many obsolete screens cannot update to freeviewHD? So we go out and buy freeviewHD boxes 'til it becomes included.

Yes if you have the full Sky package no if you don't. Love watching football in 3d it really gives the game a sense of depth.

    I purposely pre-booked 2D presentation tickets, m_c.

Cannot stand the movie industry & TV manufacturers shoehorning the technology into modern life.

The unforeseen eyesight problems in the future will mean we will all be going blind (or need prescription lenses) in a few generations.

Well done FP. One by one we shall show the movie companies we don't want 3D as the primary option in the cinemas, ideally we don't want it at all but at least make it the choice for those who want to see it not who are forced to.

no,its just a fad....just like laser disc,betamax......they weren`t around for long either!,plus people`s vision can see depth of field anyway! wearing the 3d glasses is imo, unsociable 8)

When I'm in a cinema I'm watching the large screen at the front not chatting with others.

I agree with your comment about Blu-Ray. The quality difference is negligible over upscaled DVD IMO.

But then I may just be getting old.

I agree with you OP. 3D TV's are not worth the money at the moment, in a couple of years glasses-free 3D TV's will be available and only when it becomes popular will broadcasters like the BBC and ITV start airing programmes in such a format. Just look at HD at the moment, not all channels are in HD and some of them are exclusive to Sky etc like ITV2 HD. Basically 3D content being the normal default viewing choice is a long way away.
