Hi all.

Does any one know anything about this? My son wants to buy an I Pod Touch with his birthday money but I keep telling him to wait.

He is pushing me for a date to buy but searching the net and knowing nothing about this I am struggling for answers.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me in a "morons guide to Ipod Touchs" stylee.

the apple convention s held on the 9th, the keynote about the ipod range will be shown then, and probably will hit the retail stores a week or so later. but if the new 3rd gen doesnt match any of his extra needs, then you could grab a refurb 2nd gen for a fraction of the price from apple shops :) but my predictions will be, apple release a 3.2mp camera on the new ipod touch, along with a inbuilt mic, oleophobic screen (no smudges/finger prints show up on screen), with a slightly faster processor than the 2nd gen. watch this space though, i want to see if my predictions came true :D

Which is basically an iPhone.. bar the GSM.
Skype would be fine..

Major wishful thinking:p.

well the mic is probs going to be included, dueto the new voice recognition thing, the camera would be a hgue selling point for the ipod when they do the "funnest ipod yet" adverts, and the 3.2mp cams they use cost around $10-15 anyway. the oleophobic screen is another minor cost, and will be added like on the 3gs, and i thing the processor will get better to around the 3gs's, allowing more intensive apps to run, especially with the focus on AR coming in the new os update.

skype/voip currently exists on the ipod already, you can even attach a number on and its able to recieve calls as well as send, but you currently need one of the expensive ipod earphones with mic on it.

from what the rumours say, the camera will be position dead centre, near the top. the centre because thats where the most space is due to the curvature on the ipod

Aparently voice recog is only going to be on 3G S. Well, so I've heard.

and if it is, it will probably just be a mic like the iphone headset at best.

Camera, yeah, most likely..

Olephobic, probably.

Processor, probably not, it doesn't need it, it just has apps and music.

AR, isn't on 3G because no digital compass (proved with the YELP app) so if the touch has no digital compass, it obviously wont be able to use AR.

Aye, I know all about skype.

The headset is £20 normally, same as iPod headphones. This headset will probably be included now.

The thing is I doubt half the top will come true, the nano is rumoured to have a camera too. Doesn't mean it's getting olephobic screen, built in mic etc.

nano doesnt need oleophobic screen, you arent exactly playing anythign using touch... i doubt the camera in nano anyway, too small and really isnt justified for a device solely for music. i see the mic being in built nothing major, just a small pin size whole whole somewhere, or sound collected through the cord area. if it a pin size whole, knowing apples awkardness it'll be like near the top lol. and its cheaper for inbuilt mic than giving one of those ear/mic things... although strong arguement against it that apple will make more money having recurring customers after the ear/mic due to losing/breaking, compared to inbuilt. Voice rec, already has an app in the ipod touch 2nd gen 3.0 firmwire, so im positive mic will feature in some form. and i swear i thought the 2gs had a digital compess, but i guess ill take your word for it. but i have defintely need some of the ar apps on the iphone running, and they worked very well albeit slightly slow to update as you move
