Four-legged duckling shocks owner

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42584000/jpg/_42584065_duck300.jpg

An ugly duckling has made waves on a farm - when he was born with four legs.

A rare mutation has left eight-day-old Stumpy with two extra legs behind the two he moves around on.

Owner Nicky Janaway, of Warrawee Duck Farm in the New Forest, Hampshire, said she was gobsmacked when she turned Stumpy over to check his sex.

"It was absolutely bizarre. I was thinking 'he's got too many legs' and I kept counting: One, two, three, four,'" she said.

Mrs Janaway said the animal would not survive in the wild.

"He's eating and surviving so far and he is running about with those extra legs acting like stabilisers," she said.
"He's had so much attention he is having a power nap at the moment because he's exhausted but we will making sure he's OK and hopefully he will carry on and survive."

The mutation is rare but cases have been recorded across the world.

Oh, they do actually sell ducks!! Not bad prices either lol

Eggs £1.40 per dozen
Fertile Eggs £1.00 each
Day Old ducklings £2.50 each
Week Old ducklings £4.00 each
3 Week Old ducklings £6.00 each
6 Week Old duckling £8.50 each
Up to Point of Lay £12.00 each
Point of Lay £15.00 each
Drakes £5.00 each

For those who are interested, the ducks I have are like this...

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/7486/ducks03877d907fq7.jpg

They are called Khaki Campbell ducks.

I actually bought them wanting these... Indian Runner Ducks. They stand more upright and have a bit of a comical appearance. They kinda always look like they need arms, even if it's just for balance...

http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/9255/reservechampindianrunners1.jpg

I also have Mandarin Ducks... just the pair of each breed here these days. I swapped 19 of the Cambells for the pair of Mandarins. You only have to look at them to know that they're the parrots of the duck world, lol. Quite ornamental and expensive. They're really skittish still even though they've been here since before Christmas. I need to make them a new nestbox where they can hide away from everyone...

Nah, no where near that amount. The mandarins are £45/£50 a pair. Which is quite a lot for ducks... they don't live that long and their breeding life is only a few years. There's also quite a low success rate when breeding.

As for the Khakis, they're only worth a couple of quid as table ducks really, although I'd never eat my own ducks lol.

I might get some new pictures up... it's not hard to take them though. The light where they are ain't great and the Mandarins are really quite scared of me and flap around when I go in there.

Must admit I thought that initially, but on reading it seems the little chap is doing well!

Reported to be power napping due to all the attention he's received!

Thought you'd like to know that "Stumpy" the four-legged duck is alive and well and isn't a baby any more. He's got past being a duckling which is where any problems would have occurred, so the chances of him living a normal life-span are pretty high.

I just love a happy ending...
