£400 for road tax from next April...r they 'avin a laff??

I note that those of us who chose to drive "environmentally unfriendly cars", are due to be hit with a £400 road tax next April. Personally, I think the whole issue of CO2 emissions is just another excuse for Brown/Darling to raise taxes, and the ice caps are gonna melt whether we all drive Micras or Hummers - its all part of the climate cycle for gods sake ( for the sake of some stupid gullible people). If I was driving a Hummer I'd force a smile and pay up, but I've only got a 2 litre Mondeo estate to take my 4 kids and their kit to school 8 miles away!! Can we please dispense with this rubbish government, forget political correctness ever happened, and go back to driving gas guzzlers and watching Love thy Neighbour? Anyone else miss the good old days??

2 litre Mondeo well £400 is excessive!, i'd say around £150 max would be about right!

Is the £400 based on engine size, emmisions or MPG?.. or A mixture of all 3?
#2
Based solely on emissions for all new cars purchased after March 22 2006. I hope they have a rolling program whereby the next increase only affects new cars purchased after March 2007. I had no idea this would happen when I bought my car, and if they continue to increase tax like this every year, our cars will be worth sod all!!
#3
I was expecting this to be a 10 year old + mondeo, not a new model!
#4
Linky please - before I hit the roof again with this stupid Government's ideas :x

http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk suggests the 'Ford Mondeo, February 2004 Onwards 2.0 Duratec HE Estate' is band F which is £205 at the moment.

Band G of VED will only apply to new cars registered after March 2006 which pump out > 226 g/km of CO2 and this is the band which will probably be £400 next year and is £300 at present:

£400 for Band G iirc?

Which is usually the pricer more powerful car range or is it 4x4's?
I think it's just all BandGers.

So £400 isn't that big a deal imo, I see all these massive 4x4 on narrow London streets every 9am and 4pm and I frankly I want to kill every parent I see in them.

Also come 2008+, possibly delayed till past that, all new cars sold in the EU (wonder if it'll create import market) will have to have special filters to meet the maximum emission limits, 130g/km or so adding £2000+ to the cost of the car.

I imagine this will be the next catalytic converter fiasco eventually and as take up and mass production rises costs should fall.

Nice to see the govenrment doing something right. Get all those poxy 4x4's off the road and back on the farm where they belong.

Typical Chelsea Tractor: £30,000-£60,000+ which they own for what? 2-4years?

Extra on Road Tax: £200/yearish total extra cost £400-£800 on top owning a powerful car or the worst (read: majority) of the 4x4's, % compared to car outlay of car cost: less than 1% in either case so won't be that effective, same applies to the £25 congestion charge to 4x4's, although thats a bigger dent really and tiny roman roads do not accommodate them well which must happen in any large UK city really.

I suspect too it only applies to newly bought cars too, so all the people out there right now with powerful/overly large cars won't be effected by this.
[mod]#9
Whatever happened to peoples freedom of choice?? I read in one thread about everyone hating PC Britain and then come to another and everyone's moaning and wanting to kill people who drive 4x4's. :o

Talk about wanting your cake and eating it :giggle:

Now do we live in a country full of people with an unfulfilled life or do people have too much time on their hands where they are so bothered about what other people own and do?? (of course we are.........it'd be dull otherwise. :giggle: )

Doesnt seem fair to me. Big gas guzzlers yep..If you can afford the car you can afford the tax...But £400 for a mondeo??

Brown....smell the coffee!!
#13
So drive a MK2 Mondy ST/Ghia X V6 and pay lower tax. Seems simple enough to me.
#14
Never read so much **** in my life, so if you drive a 2008 Euro IV spec car, you have to pay £300 VED, and it pollutes less than a London bus. Oh come on.

I think we will have to get the bus to Tesco's (which will be 2 buses in fact), do the shopping and then pull a knife on the driver and make him drive you to your house :whistling:

Hope my papers come thru soon as I am losing the will to live in this Country :x then I will be one of the 1500 UK residents leaving the UK EVERY day for a life elsewhere

Anyone know what the rates are for a Y reg Vauxhaul Zafira 1.6 is?

I can only find stuff that calculates on new cars!

My Ford Fiesta Zetec Climate will cost £115 for a year.
[mod]#18
So much jealousy in here towards those with better cars. :whistling: :giggle:
#19
It's not jealousy from me!

I saw a child walk behind a 4 x 4 in a supermarket and had to run and bang on the car to stop the (blond) woman (on her own in the huge vehicle) from reversing. There is no way she could see the child!

Blair made my skin crawl, and I haven't worked Brown out, but anything that helps to get these vehicle-beasts off our roads can only be good in my book.
#20
Its strange how all politicians just can't help but lie, they'll say "we'll lower the price of this" what they actually mean is "we'll lower this to look good, then in 2 months raise the price of that to balance it out......"

So judging by the size of 4x4's. We also need to remove Vans, Lorries & Busses. :o

If we apply that logic to humans then we are in deep poo poo. I can think of plenty that are of no use.

It just makes me laugh that you all moan about PC Britain in one breath and then try and restrict peoples choice in another...........so hypocritical.

like i just said in the petrol thread.... if you cant afford to run/keep a car you shouldnt have one.

I quite agree - and you don't get many lorries & buses parked at the supermarket!

I saw a programme with John Sergeant where behind a normal car you can see one child standing behind it, behind a 4 x 4 about 14 children were lined up before the driver could see them in their mirrors! Scary....

Do I take it you have a large car Syzable? And are taking this discussion as a personal attack?

I have a Cupra R and a Renault Espace but not a 4x4. I don't feel personally attacked, I just find the whole hypocracy of some of the posters amusing. :giggle:

I think this country is turning into a complete joke.

I am a firm believer in the fact that Global warming is apart of nature, and no amount of tax or cutting down on emissions is going to do anything to stop it.

there is alot of scientific proof to proove this theory also.

A lot of places will suffer if people get priced off the road. Public transport is expensive and unreliable. Alot of supermarkets are out of the way, and the extra costs they are adding to fuel, is going to make the prices of near enough everything go up.

So when is minimum wage going to rise so that people can acctulay afford to live. 15% of my monthly wage is going to have to go towards paying for my monthly travel ticket so that I can get to my place of work. Then with the cost of rent (because we can't afford to buy a house) the cost of bills (which keep on riseing), the cost of food (which will go up again thanks to the new fuel tax) it is going to become too expensive to live in the UK.

Mayaswell pack up and leave now

If you live in the country down a dirt track the need for a 4x4 can be justified... otherwise what is the need? I can understand people getting irrate about this ... but if you have the cash to buy such a car in the first place then the tax should not cripple you. The wreckage we are doing to the planet however will evenutally cripple us all. It is about thinking to the future.

If you look hard enough and trust anything you can find evidence to dispute any theory (look at evolution!). To me the scientific support that global warming is principally due to modern society is pretty black and white. Putting it in a grey area is just passing the buck. Passing the buck will result in people dying ... so personally I would rather put myself to an inconvenience.

But there is scientific evidence to say that there have been much much higher levels of carbon in the air in the past, from tests that they have done on the polar icecaps. also from carbon dating items from the past.
I am a believer in the fact that we are just coming out of the ice age. I personaly think that alot of the issues now raised are just away to tax us more.

Yes, the scientific reports i've read describe how global warming is the Earth's natural cycle of Evolution and it has happened several times before in the past and they have the evidence to prove this.

It's quite simple really, i've heard if you save the cheerleader you save the world. :whistling: :giggle:

The only difference between now and 100k years ago, is that now we can do something about it if we have the will to do so :p

There hasnt been such a dramatic rise as there has been in such a short space of time and if what you say above is true, no doubt it marked the end of most of life on Earth at the time. It goes hand in hand with the population rise and industrial growth taking place.

I dont doubt that this tax is taking place to make more revenue to pay for wars etc, but its complete ignorance to ignore the damage that Humans are causing to the planet and its eco systems.

If I'm paying higher road tax I'll just have to use my cars much more to justify owning them.

Since when has the CO2 emmisions caused by cars, air travel and industrial polution been "Natural"?

If you say so. Got any links to this "scientific proof"?

Twaddle. Buy a smaller more efficient car, which (a) means you will get more mpg, (b) cheaper tax (c) and if you drive a 4x4, drive it to the fields and buy fresh goods not to a supermarket.

So when is minimum wage going to rise so that people can acctulay afford to live.

If you are on a minimum wage, how do you afford a 4x4?

15% of my monthly wage is going to have to go towards paying for my monthly travel ticket so that I can get to my place of work.

"Going to have to go?" Are you suggesting that taxing 4x4s more is "going" to affect your train fares?

Then with the cost of rent (because we can't afford to buy a house) the cost of bills (which keep on riseing), the cost of food (which will go up again thanks to the new fuel tax) it is going to become too expensive to live in the UK.

And what part of history haven't rent, house prices and food not increased? Dont you think this is a bit melodramatic? Besides a 2p increase in fuel tax and increase in road tax for 4x4s has zero to do with your complaints above.

And back to my original point. What gives you the right to intefere with peoples freedom of choice?

People are so wrapped up in what other people own or are doing these days. Why?

You are completey free to buy the car if you wish. No infringement whatsoever and you think that "I" am interefering, I have no idea why you should think that.

People are so wrapped up in what other people own or are doing these days. Why?

Rather a general statement isn't it? This thread is regarding 4x4s and I have already stated why I am against them being on the road where there is no need for this type of vehicle. So if they raised it further to £1000, I'll be happier still - and if you wish, you still have the freedom to buy if you want to.

If you are so in love with this freedom of choice thing, I suppose you wouldn't mind if people started driving tractors and you was at the back of the queue unable to get to your destination in the time you think it should. If you would be happy (and I would be surprised if you said you were), then fair enough - but I doubt many would agree. If you wouldn't be happy - then "what gives you the right to interfere in other peoples choices"?
