Just found out that it was a transaction made with Great Universal! Not only that but the scammer had tried to do one beforehand for £863.26, I'm thinking this was declined due to lack of funds.
Woke up this morning to an email saying my password had been changed at 2am, logged onto my Halifax internet banking and saw I was £540.48 down. Called Halifax who have confirmed someone has made an online purchase at that amount so have cancelled my card, reset my password, set up an investigation, and will call me tomorrow.
I have never had anything like this happen before, just wondering, has anyone gone through this with Halifax and/or Great Universal and come out unscathed? Thanks.

yup. lost almost £1k with hbos. Got it all back. Took a few weeks, but they set up another account with £100 overdraft to tied us over so we were,nt completely without.

Thats exactly what I thought, and said to the Halifax guy but he didnt seem to have the answer. I'm just really concerned that they won't refund the money because its a password thing as opposed to a card copying thing etc.

Have you recently clicked on any links from emails sent by banks? It's could have bee a spoof email setup to get your bank details.

Unlucky... I think banks are usually pretty good with online fraud, my brother had someone take some money out of his account but they sorted it no problems... (Lloyds by the way)

the bank guarantee against online fraud. period. regardless of how it is carried out. Dont worry over it. let the bank do their thing.

I made a post on here about it I think, it might have been over at imgburn. It was russian railways that took £687 quid from my account and changed my halifax secure pasword.

There is something wrong with their system thats 4 sure as my password was at least 11 chars long letters numbers and actually it was 15ch long.

Not the security on my system, anit malware . spybot , ie resident all updated immunized etc avg updated. It's a flaw in Verified by Visa 100%

my answers to secret questions are not stored on this PC at all they could only have gotten them from VISA

OMG that is so scary. You didn't get a email from Halifax in the past saying someone has tried to log into your account, please log in a change your password etc etc. Because that's hackers and they have a keylogging tool, so they can see which password you are putting in.
I get those emails all the time for Abbey, Natwest, Halifax, Egg. Funny thing. I don't have accounts with any of them.

Its not the internet banking side of things that has a different password. Halifax Secure is the little box that pops up when you make a purchase asking you to verify your password to complete the purchase. I haven't even used the service for a long long time, so I can't even remember the last time I entered the password.

Last week I had someone use my Halifax debit card in a ATM machine in Poland. The weird thing is I don't even use my debit card much and never been online shopping with it.

Nope, I haven't seen anything from Halifax in ages, never had an issue with them. I've had all those emails trying to get you to do stuff, and until I saw that they wanted me to call them , I thought this email was the same haha!

my other half lost £650 with Lloyds Tsb, someone copied his card somwhere then used it on-line and in the London area, we're from Glasgow, he got the card cancelled and Visa Risk refunded the money, and he had to fill in a form.

My answers aren't stored anywhere either, its really scary what they can do.

The OPs problem isn't with online banking as such.

The Halifax secure of which the OP speaks of is only used when you purchase something online you don't need or use it to access online banking.

As someone mentioned they send you a form to complete confirming you know nothing about it so its fraud and the Police can be involved etc.

My son got a virus on the home computer well a say a virus it was about 10 that got picked up with superantispyware & malwarebytes but i thought i had got rid of them im now going to bin the PC and get a new one i just cannot trust there are anymore hiding away.

Credit cards are great for that, saying that, Barclaycard never call me when I make a purchase despite me not using that often, whereas Capital One practically check all my friends transactions because she rarely uses it.

I wouldn't bin the computer just because of this - you just need to do very thorough virus scans, do a secure wipe of the hard disk and then reinstall your operating system from scratch.

Once that's in place look into getting Comodo Firewall installed on your computer and a decent antivirus package before connecting to the internet - as soon as you get onto the internet immediately update your Comodo Firewall & antivirus installation then proceed with downloading all of the Microsoft patches.

After you've completed that kick off a reboot of your computer (if not already done during the updating) and kick off a full virus scan followed by up by a malware & spyware scan (consider using Malwarebytes) - do this on a regular basis and always clean out your temporary internet files & cookies.

There may be a little more to it, I'd assume they'd track where the request came from - given you were alerted to it clearly they thought it was suspicious so I'm assuming there's a good chance the request came from outside the UK and should be easier to show it's fraud. There's also the issue that this is not just your password which was broken, someone managed to obtain all your card details as well.
