The halogen type bulbs, are they better than those eco-bulbs which take an age to warm up and, despite govt and manufacturer claims, provide less light than the equivalent incandescent bulbs?

Yes. You may be less green but at least you can be seen or see straight away and can also dim them if required

Yeh they were about £4/£4.50 for 2 bulbs. They were the old style - not the halogen style.
I stocked up on loads of 40w old style ones from Tesco a few months ago when they sold them for 25p for 2 or 37p for 4.
