£9K compensation for toddler attacked by a paedophile is deemed 'lousy' by mother

A schoolgirl who was assaulted by a paedophile as a toddler has been awarded £9,000 damages, it was reported today.

The girl was three-years-old when Craig Sweeney, 26, abducted her from her Cardiff home before subjecting her to a sexual assault in January 2006.

She was then driven away down the M4 in an ordeal that only ended when the car crashed.

Agreed despicable! I havent read the article but who pays, is it this Sweeney character or is it us, the tax payer?

£9k is pretty pathetic, but then it just shows you how bad our justice system is

She could do a book about her ordeal and make more.

outrageous story !

Few more snippets

The woman said her daughter is 'not a normal six-year-old', and that she does not sleep properly, but spends her nights whimpering.

She told the newspaper the girl locks herself in her room for two hours after school each day, banging a teddy bear against the wall.

:-(

However, some good news

Convicted paedophile Sweeney was sentenced to life imprisonment in June 2006 after admitting kidnapping and sexually assaulting the girl. Judge John Griffith Williams told him he was a 'devious' man and that he would spend a minimum of five years and 108 days in prison.

However, how does life imprisonment equate to a minimum of just over 5 years? :?

Life imprisonment now means 5 years? You might as well use "get out of jail free" cards from monopoly!

This is compo from the taxpayer, why is the villian not paying out? This is like fining you and me for the crime.

I can't see that the taxpayer paying out vast sums will help this victim, as the counselling and medical care is provided free anyway.

No amount of compensation will repair the damage she's suffered, But £9k is despicable

They'll spend more money counselling Sweeney.

Life in prison isn't hard for a paedo, own room, three meals a day, sat tv and pocket money :x

So she was abducted from her house, why wasn't a 3 year old child being supervised?

The taxpayer shouldn't have to pay anything, any compensation should come from the paedo and the little girls mother.

Harsh I know but I can't work out how the Paedo managed to abduct a little girl from her own home. He should be locked up for a lot longer too, the bloke is evidently sick, I watched a trial recently where a bloke got ordered to serve a minimum of 8 years for just looking at images of young children.

The woman's right in that it is lousy, but the £9k that the girl got was public money for victims of crime. Doesn't that mean that she is still entitled to sue the kiddiefiddler for damages in a civil case?

Same story, more details at the time.

A convicted paedophile has admitted abducting a toddler, assaulting her and driving her more than 100 miles from her home in Cardiff.

At the time Craig Sweeney, 24, was staying in a bail hostel after being released early from jail for indecently assaulting a six-year-old.

Interesting, so soon after the recent discussion on paedophiles releases. I wonder what liddle ol' me and BG1 make of this :whistling:

Sweeney's defence counsel David Leathley said his client did not see himself "as harbouring a sexual problem".

The court heard that Sweeney was jailed in 2003 for indecently assaulting a six-year-old girl while babysitting.

Doesn't help he was known to the family too, they surely should have known of his priors :?

Everyone can bash the £9k figure but what would people deem to be the right amount?
#16
he should be locked up til the day he dies

tho i even consider that to be not enough punishment!! :x
#17
Truly despicable people about!

9K is a bit of a mickey taking amount though compared to other cases(in general)

One thing though, what is the £9000 actually for? Am I missing something? I'm assuming the family have not had to shell out anything towards the trial.

Throwing money at it definitely isn't the right answer. It can't erase the memories. Counselling for the rest of her life is the only key.

Get tired of hearing victims and their families getting confused and trying to put monetary values against their losses.

Perhaps put him in a room full of mothers with baseball bats. That would release some tension ;-)

Or children who have been abused by them, when they get to 18, even better :-D

I think you are missing the point. It isn't so much about how much money she has "made" from the ordeal, but the lowly sum which somebody has valued her ordeal at.

actually the taxpayer does not pay anything. The amount comes from the victim surcharge fund which is money taken from criminals when they get banged up. Its now added into a lot of minor cases too, like speeding.
