I got the latitude d830 (which gives battlefield 2142 a very strange visual *treat*) so I am a little jealous.
Wait are you using vista, xp is better if you meet slowdown or some programs/games aren't compatible. (I would recommend linux if your mum is confident in computer use)

Ask if you need help though.

thought with it having a sata hard drive (think thats what it called) you couldnt downgrade to xp without major problems

Yes and no...the problem is XP doesn't have any inbuilt sata drivers but you can create a new Windows CD with these drivers already added. There's not much point going into it at the moment but if your Mum is having trouble with Vista and you'd rather get XP on there you can ask for some advice later.

Glad to hear you got the laptop in the end, was it an outlet one you got in the end? I kind of lost track as you seemed to be looking at a lot of different Studio 17's

hey guys, she posted the first post, that is it, it is old sassie after that - lol She very happy with vista, having no problems and getting on with it

Yes john it was an oulet one, the spec we got was to good to leave there, had everything she wanted, albeit it also cost more than i wanted - lol

That is the danger of the outlet...I ended up gettinga better than expected machine for my Mum off the outlet, cost a bit more than planned but she really likes it (Vostro 1310) and it was about half the price of the main site.

The outlet is great...does need some patience but the savings are well worth every penny, it's great being able to get top spec options without paying the ridiculuous upgrade prices on the Dell site. I'm quite pleased with a little Dell Studio Hybrid I bought off Dell's ebay outlet where they sell cosmetically damaged units which can't be sold on their main outlet. When the PC arrived I was expecting some amusing gouge all down the side or similar which I wasn't bothered about but it's perfect, I can't find any scratches on it at all. Needless to say, I'm not complaining
