A car question. Cos I know zilch about cars.

On my way home yesterday, I heard a scraping noise from under the car!!
I got out & the exhaust was scraping along the floor!!!

As I was still a couple of miles away from home, I called the AA. The AA guy did a temporary fix using wire & got me back on my merry way.
He said there's no damage to the exhaust but the rubber mounts have perished ( think he said 4 of them) hence it dropping.

Anyway, the exhaust isnt that old. So my question is, if I take it to Kwik-fit, National or such-like, will I have to get a new exhaust or will they just be able to fix the old'un back on?

And how many spondoolies is this gonna set me back?
It's a 97 vectra estate by the way. 2litre.

Cars. Like computers & women. When they're good they're good......

Ring a scrapyard and they may have some of the holders as no point going to a garage as they will rob you as these dont come with a new exhaust and you can fit these yourself!! Its just a thick rubber oval shaped thing which has two holes which connect to the exhaust and mounts velded on the car!!

yeh get some from the scrappy and try and fit them yourself or local machanics. dont go anywhere near kwik fit or nationwide as you will probably end up with new exhaust, tyres and brakes!

My m8 used to work for qwik fit, they may charge you for the fixing, but generally, if you have a friendly lot, they will help you out with this at minimal cost

If it is just the rubbers then as long as what the AA guy told you is correct and lets face it theres no reason why it wouldnt be, then there will be no need for a new exhaust, I am unsure as to whether or not Kwik fit sell the mounting rubbers on there own but I know that you can purchase them from most breakers/scrap yards at very little cost, a bonus if you know someone who is hands on and can fit them for you, total cost should be about £20 - £30. hope this helps

thanks for all above guys - even with my (very ) limited knowledge, that was what I thought. - The AA bloke pointed out the mounts & they were like little black solid rubber efforts.

I will have a gander round tomorrow then.

repped.

With a 97 plate car you should really invest in a Haynes manual and you can save yourself a fortune. Will show you how to fit rubber mounts to exhaust for example.

Usually available on ebay etc, circa £10. Put it on your Chrimbo list.
