Simon Cremer 300x243 Crime Pays: Thief Wins £13000 Because Victim Lost Faith In Justice SystemMARK Gilbert has won £13,000 damages from his former boss Simon Cremer. He sued for “humiliation” for being made to wear a sign saying “THIEF – I stole £845 am on my way to the police station” about his neck and forcibly walked to a police station.

Would you have agreed to wear such a sign? Gilbert’s hands were bound. He says he was beaten. Mr Cremer denies using violence.

Gilbert’s crime was to have written out a company cheque to himself and taken it to a Cash Converters in Essex. Gilbert got a caution. Cremer was charged with false imprisonment, but the case collapsed in December 2008.

Then Cremer was invited to go to court. Gilbert wanted redress for alleged psychological distress and lost earnings

IMO the thief got what was coming to him, the boss should not have been taken to court over it!

I'd go round and beat my £13,000 worth out of him and take the prison sentence.

I think the boss should sue the police!!! How ridiculous is it that a thief is actually given compensation when he's broken the law? I thought Cameron was supposed to be sorting this country out- he should have started with the judicial system!

If he stole £13,000 worth of possesions from him, he'd probably get a slap on the wrist so I'd take my chances!!

can't believe it, this country is a joke!

source of info?

must be more to this than OP states as you wouldnt get done for false imprisonment for hanging a sign around someone's neck!

I think it's because he made false handcuffs and marched him down the street.

it states in OP that the thief claims he was beaten.

as I thought (certainly looks like he was beaten judging by marks on face and boss's knuckles!):-

Gilbert said he feared he was going to be killed as he was bundled into the back of a van.

He said: ‘They laid into me, they beat me, I was begging Simon to let me go to the police, they said they didn’t trust me and they had to tie me up. They were punching me and threatened me with various tools.’

The case against Mr Cremer was ultimately dropped.

A civil case was due before a court this week but has now been settled.

Mr Cremer has had to pay £5,000 in compensation and £8,000 court costs, saying going through with a trial could have bankrupted him.

But if you look at the picture, he doesn't look beaten at all. Would have been able to be walk down the street if he was beaten? He'd be black and blue lay on the floor!

yes he does! people still walk after being beaten you know. oO

obviously beaten as there is no way anyone would walk down the street like that unless they feared further violence

two wrongs dont make a right so OP is making a mountain out of a molehill.

Sue them for what? What have the police done wrong?
#22
The bloke deserved it, if he called the police like a 'normal' person in the first place then none of this would have happened.
#23
if the thief hadn't stolen anything in the first place none of this would have happened!

so if someone steals from you, it should be ok to beat them up and then take them to the police station.

Nice one!

Irrelevant what you think.

You started this thread without reading the story apparently. It was a civil matter and he chose to settle.

At least I bothered to read the story and engage my brain.

You're making comments about things you don't know - I'm commenting on the FACTS. That's why your comments are irrelevant.

That doesn't preclude your opinion from being irrelevant.

It also doesn't mean people can't point out the fault in your 'logic'.

Either way, terrible grammar.

So does 'voicing your opinion' mean no one can offer a different opinion?
