I'm thinking of getting an iPhone (3GS) from the Apple store.

Anyone got one lately know if they're coming out with firmware 3.1 as I want to use it on Orange ?

Do we think that once Orange get them the firmware will be interchangeable? If I get an O2 model now what are the odds that it could be flashed with the Orange firmware when that model appears. I know that's a bit of an iffy question but I'm guessing that if a jb'd O2 will work on other network there can't any difference in the hardware.

I need to get one in the next 2 weeks as I'll lose access to a discount offer through work after that, so I can't just wait for the Orange model to come out...

Thanks.

Isn't it out on Orange on Friday 9th ? Would that not give you a week to play with?

O2 ones are locked to O2 and will not be unlocked even after the contract ends

If you want to keep the warrenty, then just uy from Apple direct and then put whatever sim card you like in it

Apple does the updates, not O2 or Orange, 3.1 is already out and your phone should come with it in it already, if not it will update to it when you connect it to your computer

under ofcom rules they have to unlock it (especially since they're not the only carrier now)

Just wait until it comes out on orange to be safe - but who knows if it's coming out on PAYG on orange?

And unlockable as they're coming on 3.1 now.

So if they're locked to O2 now (and I thought the point of buying from the manufacture was to get a sim free like Nokia ect), when they arrive on Orange and Voda will you have the choice of which network you're tied to ?

They do not come sim free, although an unlock solution for 3.1 should be found soon and no doubt the dev team will start playing around with the orange/vodafone firmware on it's release.
