1) Indeed it is. As long as you have the operating system disc to hand the pop it into the cd drive and reboot and follow the prompts to reformat the hard drive. Of course remember to back up any files that you wish to keep as you will LOSE them.
Also vist the laptop makers website and download any drivers that are needed.

2) For the AV, for me you can't beat AVG and it's free.

Ignore point 2 above. AVG is next to useless now.

Go with a paid one like kaspersky or AVIRA or AVAST if you want a free one (not as good as kaspersky though).

I agree with the comment on AVG, it used to be great but has really gone downhill lately, I have switched to Avast and it seems fine, it also does not slow everything up during a scan the way AVG used to which is a bonus!

Now that is interesting.

I did have kaspersky but felt that it slowed my machine down and as for the internet, some sections needed to be switched off so that I could continue with shopping via cashback sites.
Of course, as soon as you turn off a section, it nags at you!

I'll have a read of Micro Mart in a mo as I noticed they have done a "paid for" test of AV and see what they have come up with.

thing with most Free AV software is they just do 1 thing. scan for viruses.
if they dont even do that well, you're knacked!

just buy a decent one, its a small price to pay for a years worth.

Eset Smart Security rocks.
