A monday morning puzzle

3 guys go to London for the weekend and book into a cheap hotel-the receptionist tells them the room will cost 30 pounds,so they each pay a tenner each and go to their room.

Ten minutes later, the receptionist realises she has overcharged them and that the actual room cost is £25,so she calls the porter, gives him five pound coins and tells him to take the refund up to the room and give them it.

On the way upstairs, the porter pockets 2 quid for himself and refunds the 3 men one pound each.

So this means they have each paid £9 for the room-3x9=27,plus the £2 the porter took=£29.

so where is the other pound?

doesnt work that way

they ended up paying £27 for the room (£25 for the hotel & £2 for the porter)

basically, you went wrong here:-

So this means they have each paid £9 for the room-3x9=27,MINUS the £2 the porter took=£25.

There is no missing pound. :D

err,no.because there was originally 30 quid so if its MINUS the 2 the porter took, then theres a fiver missing is there not? they originally forked over £30-if they get a one pound refund each they have paid £9 each for the room=27 PLUS the 2 the porter has in his pocket=29.

It's a paradox.........it all depends on how you do the maths to get the total amount.

.............but there is still no missing pound. :D

ok sy-you too clever-you are correct-its a simple linguistic trick whereby you mix a multiplication and an addition and create a paradox(Im not that clever btw-thats the explanation in the book)

so it is all about how you explain it-the receptionist has 25,the guys have 3,the porter has 2=30

It right Barky.

They pay £30.

Receptionist gives porter £5.

They each get £1 back.

They have therefore paid £27 between them for a £25 room.

This leaves £2 difference for the porter to pocket.

It's the "3 x £9 = £27" bit which makes it a riddle.

Yes, granted this is correct, but they have already received the £1 refund at this point.

So they have paid 3 lots of £9 to make £27, but have had £1 refund each.

£27 + £3 = £30 originally paid.
(3 x £9) + (3 x £1) = £30.

Love the way people argue about this puzzle as if there really is/ isn't a missing pound :)
