I work for a large company who recently went into the locker room and searched all the lockers, now I know this is allowed as they are company property, but my handbag was in my locker and I was not present nor had I been asked for consent to have my bag searched. When I went into my locker after my bag was open. Is this legal?

you dont need to be present-nor do they need your permission-they must have at least 2 responsible people(managers/supervisors etc) present-a single person is not allowed to conduct such a search.

also female lockers should only be searched by female colleagues(for decencys sake-not a legal requirement)

if they told people they were conducting locker searches it would defeat the purpose wouldnt it?

Thanks, it's more about my handbag than locker and it was searched by 3 men!

I think its poor that 3 men went through the ladies lockers-not illegal, but very insensitive of them.

In addition, searches must be "reasonable"-ie,they cannot be uneccesarily intrusive-if they are searching for possible staff pilfering that is all they can look for-they cannot read diaries, letters etc,or turn on your phone and read messages etc-I have heard of this happening tho.
