Hey all, I just moved from sky broadband to O2 8mb broadband on monday, i am really happy to have got away from sky as my online gaming was crap with them, now with o2 and i haven't seen any lag at all.

My question is i have noticed between 4pm and 12am my speed drops from around 850kb to just 2mb why is this? do they limit it between peak times or something? any other time before or after this time i get 6985kb which is great.

So is this normal to get a low speed between these times? does this happen to anyone else on o2? do you think i should call o2 up?

Thanks for any info
Dave

Hi Dave, I have been with O2 for over a year now and I have not had this problem. I regularily get over the 6meg speeds. I would call them on their 0800 number and ask for this to be checked they are usually very fast to act and very helpful

if you have just moved it takes 10 working days for your line to stabilize mines sits around 7.2 and 1.2 up very happy have 3 pc's and 2 xbox live services running .........................sky was pants

but sayinmg that i am 1.2miles from o2 upgraded exchange ..google your local exchange to see if its been upgraded as well

going off topic a bit Dave, but how did you find the swap over? Did it go smoothly? Did you have much trouble getting the MAC code from Sky? How long were you without Broadband whilst waitng for the changeover?

Apologies for all the questions but I'm going to be swapping from sky to o2 in March.

I think i may give them a phone later after i have checked the speed after 4pm to see if it's still doing it.

Sky was a real pain in the ****, i don't know why i stayed with them for 16 months:oops: hopefully after 10 days it will settle in to the great speed of just under 7mb:-D i did google my exchange but i can't see much on it apart from LLU services thing, is there anything i should be looking out for on it?

The move from sky to o2 was so smooth, i phoned sky and asked for the mac code and they said i'll receive it in 5 days, i wasn't really happy with the wait so i kept calling them everyday and got it 2 days later over the phone, gave it to o2 over the internet because of the free £50 cashback from Quidco, took o2 8 days to go live, i was still using sky broadband right till the very last minute till o2 went live, so all in all not even a minutes down time.

I'm on the O2 Home Broadband Access as o2 isn't in my area to get the very cheap £7.50 package, so i'm paying £17.50 the same as i was paying for sky BB but with a much better service and 1000 times better phone support.

Oh dear, the 02 Access package has a dreadful reputation, no LLU not worth going to 02.

I don't have many isp's in my area so that's why i went with O2 as i seen on here and other web sites with tons of people saying O2 are the best to go for, what is the problems that people are having with this package?

You have a huge choice of non LLU suppliers.

The main complaints about 02 Access is throttling of speeds.

02 LLU is good value.

Yeah, I don't know where you got the impression that you've not got much choice. If you can get O2 access at 6985kbit/s then you can get 95% of the ISPs available in the UK with the only major exceptions being the LLU-only operators like Be who are only available in the more densely populated areas. (they're connected up to about 20% of exchanges covering 60-70% of the population).

The slow down is likely to be O2 slowing it down especially as it's a nice round and fixed speed at 2mb. Switch to a better ISP and the problem will vanish. I guess you signed up to a 12 month contract though so you're probably best putting up with it for a while, at least 2Mb isn't that bad.

I don't know where you get that i can get 95% of isp's from as i can only get 10 isp's in my area:roll:
this is just one of the broadband finder places i've checked and they all give the same results. http://www.broadband-finder.co.uk/compare-broadband/broadband.html

Anyway i phoned O2 up and told the guy about the problem and he said that for the first 10 days bt do a stress test on my line to find out the maximum speed my line can handle, i asked him will i receive a steady speed after the 10 days and he said yes, so i really hope so as i will be phoning them back up in say 12 days time if it's still the same.

Sorry that is rubbish, you can use any ISP that provides BB via BT ( that is not LLU. )

Trust me there are far more than 10.

That site only lists 16 ISPs in total. Where are Zen, ADSL24, IDNet, Entanet, UKOnline, Post Office Broadband, NewNet, Vispa and F2S? Not to mention all of the ISPs that only do business grade packages like Entanet and AAISP. Basically, It's a lousy website.

Phone him back up now and ask him what sort of drop you can expect.

It isn't this, and if it was you wouldn't like it since after ten days you get set to the lowest speed to stop your line disconnecting and reconnecting at that (which is far more annoying than the small drop in speed this actually amounts to).
