A serious dillemma-how can I be certain.....

That the light in my fridge goes out when I close the door?

No way to be sure is there? What if the fridge manufacturers have been lying to us all this time and it stays on?

metaphysics........hmmmm

Try pushing the button. If it goes out then you know it will go out when the door pushes the button.

Make a hole in the door and look through the hole...........

This also worried me. I first solved it by putting a running camera into the fridge and this gave me reassurance for a while as it clearly showed the light going out.

However I then remembered that by observing an event you cannot help but change it. At this point I gave up and took the bulb out I now have a torch sitting on the fridge (bulb end up to ensure it is also off when not required) and use that for any evening use of the fridge.

very sensible solution too-I had thought about isolating the power to the light and running it off a separate plug from the fridge, then I could turn it off when not required rather than lose any more sleep worrying whether it goes off on door closure or not.

1 Take out all the trays, shelves etc and contents

2 Wrap a three-year old up warmly

3 Place child in fridge

4 Close door

5 Count to three

6 Open door

7 Remove child

8 Phone trauma clinic

9 While help is arriving, ask child if they were trapped in a light place or a dark place.

Hope this helps.

The seems to me to have health and safety implications!

After all while you are going through this drawn out procedure your food could reach unsafe temperatures for further storage.

I would suggest anybody going down this route at least add a step in between 7 and 8

7b replace food in fridge as quickly as possible.

yes,but the cupboard didnt have a light-being completely pedantic about it,pushing the button DOESNT prove that the same result will occur when you close the door-its the most likely possibility but you cannot be sure, and I need to be sure, otherwise the whole discussion is pointless...oh no wait.........

Place a sensitive set of photovoltaic cells inside linked to a transmitter that will send a signal to a loudpeaker, if a current is generated. Close the door and listen.

With a fridge no, but apparently the kebab shop would be happy to let you try this with their freezer, they will even portion it up for you so it stacks more neatly.

Why doesn't it exactly? The button is actuated by the physical connection with the fridge door when it's closed, which is mimicked by merely pressing the button when it's open.

It's more of a mechanical issue, than electrical, really.

How can you be sure that the light exists when you close the door (or, for that matter, anything inside the fridge)? If no-one see it, how can you prove its existence, or non-existence? (google "Schrodinger's cat" for an explanation)

indeed, but if I push the button with the door open,I can actually SEE the light go out so that gives me proof that the mechanism is working, but only at that particular moment in time-so If I then immediately close the door, and cant see the light go out,I have no PROOF do I?

my brain is starting to hurt now,and there isnt much of it left.

OK

Now I'm confused

Is it a cat or a dalmation (or a chicken) in the fridge?

actually hasnt done anything insane for a few days-probably got something in the planning stage tho-I think its madness goes back to the fact that it was expelled from dog training classes.

the woman who ran the classes told mrs barky not to bring him back as he was upsetting the other puppies, and that in 25 years of traning dogs he was the stupidest animal she had ever met.

mrs barky actually boasts that he is "the only dog ever to be expelled from overlea dog school"-like its a badge of honour!

haha - combine those two- insert a sensitive electrode into the speech motor area of the brain, train the nerve pathways to respond appropriately and if the signal is sent you say 'there is light'! How definitive is that?

ours will be 4 on sept 21st-completely untrainable! he is a beautiful dog, loves the kids and isnt dangerous or anything, but he is bonkers!

You could remove the bulb and connect 2 wires to the contacts, then connect the bulb to the wires running outside the fridge. I do this little test daily as these things are really worrying I agree.....

Schroedinger's fridge. What if it's completely empty inside when you close it? The light might not even exist
