A Wii BIT OF ADVICE, PLEASE .......

I am getting some money in a few days and I have decided to put some of it towards a Nintendo Wii. However, I have absolutely no idea about them except that they look fun judging by the adverts on TV. I know that most places sell the console and Wii Sports for £180. So I wonder if you kind and knowledgeable folks could answer a few questions for me, please.

1. What else do I need to buy with the console? I have seen loads of accessories for sale, eg. steering wheels, tennis racquets, Wii remotes, nunchucks.

2. What is a remote and what is a nunchuk - what different things do they do? I know you get one of each in the starter pack, but do I need more of these for 2 people to play the same game?

3. If you buy a game that involves driving or playing tennis, do you then need to buy a steering wheel and racquets? If not, how do you steer, or hit the ball?

4. My girls (age 7 & 5) have asked for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games - do I need to buy extra accessories to play this?

5. How does it plug into the TV?

Any recommendations for other games?

Thanks all.

1) initially you shouldn't need anything else with your console. You can acsessorise once you know whats what.
2) The wii mote looks like a white remote control. there are A & B buttons and 1 &2 buttons and a little button at the top like a cross for direction movment. it's pretty straight forward. The nunchuck can connect to the wii remote and acts as a directional tool i guess. its got a little joy stick on top. You use it for boxing. the only other game i use mine for is harry potter ( which i don't much like anyway!)
3) i dont know about driving games as i dont have any, but for tennis and golf or baseball on wii sports you dont need anything but the wii mote. You just wave it around as though it were a bat, or club or whatever.
I dont know about mario as i dont have that either. and i have my wii connected via the scart lead, there is another connection supplied but i dont know what thats called.

Wii play is good for mini games, plus you can buy a second wii mote with it :)

1. Nothing - just games and extra remotes if you desire.

2. The Wii remote (Wiimote) is the main controller, it works as a pointer and it also senses motion. Games like Wii Sports use just the Wiimote.

The nunchuck has an analogue control stick, and it has motion sensing (but can't 'point' like the Wiimote). The nunchuck is always used in conjunction with the Wiimote, and it is generally the more complex games that will use it, for example Zelda, Metroid Prime, Mario Galaxy etc.

There are a few games where you can play multiplayer with 1 remote (Warioware, Big Brain Academy), but this involves taking turns anyway. For 'proper' multiplayer you will need at least another Wiimote, and maybe another nunchuck if it's that type of game.

3. Most of the tennis racquet, steering wheel etc type peripherals don't actually do anything - they just act as a shell in which you can put the Wiimote. In my opinion, they're pretty much useless, and I wouldn't bother with them. You can play the game just as well without them. The exception is the wheel that comes bundled with Mario Kart - it's still effectively a shell, but it's purpose made for Mario Kart, and it works much better than using the Wiimote on its own. That said, you can use a Wiimote + nunchuck combination to steer instead, but you use the control stick instead of motion controls.

4. No, as far as I know you can play most (if not all) of the games in Mario and Sonic with just a Wiimote, so for multiplayer you'd need a 2nd Wiimote, but that's all really.

5. It comes with a composite cable (yellow, white and red connectors), and a SCART adapter (sort of rectangular with lots of flat pins). Unless your TV is very old, it'll have at least one of these connections. You can also buy a component cable, which will give you a sharper picture, but that is only if you have a HDTV.

I agree with Bellabonkers - Wii Play comes with a Wiimote, and is nominally the same price as a Wiimote anyway. I'd also recommend getting a second nunchuck, mainly so you have a proper set for the games that do use the Wiimote and nunchuck, in order to play multiplayer.

I don't think his girls will enjoy Call of Duty 4 as much as Mario and Sonic.

What games did you have for your Wii? It seems like you didn't give it much of a chance, there are a lot of decent games out for it now.

you dont need to buy anything else apart from maybe Wii Play about £30 to give you an extra wii-mote a nun-chuck £15

2. What is a remote and what is a nunchuk - what different things do they do? I know you get one of each in the starter pack, but do I need more of these for 2 people to play the same game?
you use the wii-mote and nun-chuck if the game needs it, on the back of the box on the games it tells you whatg you need to play it with little pictures. to play 2 players buy Wii-Play (it comes with a wii-mote not the nun-chuck thou) if you want the nun-chuck due to the games you pick buy that sperate, most games dont need both.

3. If you buy a game that involves driving or playing tennis, do you then need to buy a steering wheel and racquets? If not, how do you steer, or hit the ball?
you dont need to buy any of the you can do it all with wii-mote and nun chuck, they do make it easier to play some games, but you only plug your wii mote into them. so you can just tilt the wii-mote like you would with a steering wheel or golf club.

4. My girls (age 7 & 5) have asked for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games - do I need to buy extra accessories to play this?
to play this i think you should get another wii-mote (about £25) and nun-chuck about (about £15) to play all the games on that game properlly to the fullest. but you can just get away with 2 wii-motes (in which case get wii-play for a few £ more to get the free-mote and get the game with it)

5. How does it plug into the TV?
It plugs in with Yellow, Red and White phonos or Scart.

Any recommendations for other games?
Mario Kart would be great for them as a 2 player and single game, might be worth getting some Gamecube controllers for it as you can use either to play it and it can play easier (about £5) kids might like Happy feet which is about £10 and monkey ball well worth getting £13 Zavvi

hope that helps :) if you want any more advice just ask, hope it helps

The Wii sports that comes in every bundle will keep them happy for a while if you don't feel like buying any other games straight away.
Then I would recommend for children, Mario VS Sonic at Olympic Games and Mario Kart.

My eyes are hurting from looking at Wii's all night!!
It would seem that no-one offers Quidco on Wii Consoles. :x
A few places (including John Lewis)still don't sell the console by itself (with the sports) but have bundled it with various games. :x
Wii Play is out of stock in most places. Except Amazon, where it is £39.99. :x

I'll keep looking over the next few days.

EDIT : Don't even get nectar points on Wii hardware.
