Hi guys,

The misses daughter has gone a got a virus on her laptop, black screen but mouse works, pressing shift 5 times, ctrl alt del etc no joy. I have one recovery disc but not the second one.

I know i can do a system restore without the discs but need the discs if i am to save the files on the laptop.

Is there anything i can do to get a second disc or possible get something up on the screen?

Its an Acer aspire 6930z, cheers.

hi, u can try pressing f12 or f8 on start up which should take u to bios where you should be able to start in safe mode, were u will be able to scan etc to see if you can get rid of virus, there is a bad one going round where it eats yr c drive, if u go to acer website there is downloads what might be able to help you, ;)

what you need is the vista recovery disk: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/

it's a full vista disk with all the installation stuff stripped off, so there's only the recovery mode available. when you boot it up, ignore the install option and look for the recovery option. you can run system restore from there

i didnt think i could use anything but the recovery discs, i have vista anyway so im guessing i can use mine and just choose the recovery mode option> thanks oldman.

Vista? I just fixed a relatives laptop with the same problem but unfortunately I had to restore to the factory image losing all data. I have restored the same computer previous to this with restore points but they were deleted completely this time.

Right as mentioned although it looks like you have tried, is alt ctrl del or ctrl shift esc on the black screen, you may want to try hitting enter first as there may be a log in screen to bypass.

Holding or tapping f8 on start up should give you the option to access the recovery console, have a look in there and see if there are any restore points, if there is then you are flying just go back a week or two and restore, if they are gone as I expect then it will be more difficult I am afraid.

As suggested, try to boot into safe mode, or safe mode with command prompt.

Try here for further info regarding command prompt (And registry problem)

I tried everything everything possible to rescue the data on the laptop but was unsuccessful, and I am supposed to be an expert, the factory image restore was the only way out on this occasion, I hate Vista

if all else fails, look like full install is needed,
#8
just so you know, system restore won't make any changes to documents, etc so no need to worry about losing things
#9
cheers sparky, tried f8, ive clicked repair your computer, last known good config and still just a black screen with the pointer, looks like the data is gone and yeah im supposed to be an expert to, shows what we know lol, thanks again.

For data recovery, either:
- Take the hard drive out and put it in another computer as a secondary drive.
- Download a Linux live CD image and burn it to CD or USB. Boot into Linux, mount the drive (should be done automatically) and then you can hopefully get at the files and copy them over to a USB or external hard drive.
- Put hard drive in USB caddy and plug it in another computer

Windows not booting doesn't necessarily mean that personal files are gone. The operating system's files might be buggered, but the stuff in My Documents, etc should be unaffected.

When doing it, I'd also advise running virus/anti-spyware scan on the drive, May be via a machine that's got an MS OS, Spybot, Malwarebytes, Commodo, Superantispyware, Avast and or MSE.

Otherwise you could end up infecting more computers or ending back to square one, Also do a full format of the harddrive, In the past I've done quick formats and still been left with a virus..!!!

I may be wrong but I do remember using the keys alt+F10 or Alt+F11(While the PC was booting up from start) and that took me right into the Acer system recovery programme with no disks.

Had to try 3 times but on the 3rd attempt while pressing Alt and F10 I'm sure it worked.

Hope it helps.
