Hi,
Got a strange problem with an acer aspire 7000
it wont power off without taking the battery out.
It shuts down turns off leaving the wireless light ,dvd drive light and power light on.
The only way to power it back up is to take the battery out.
It will go through a restart fine.
I have restored it to factory settings and flashed the bios, tried it with power cable in and out.
Confused by this one, anyone have any idea's??

Are you shutting down using the start menu or power button?

Tried both,
as i say it will go through a restart fine.
Although it also sticks if it hibernates.

If it fails to turn off, just keep the power button pressed down until it does.

It has the same effect....

I realise this is not the best answer, but you could remove the battery completely if you only use the laptop on the mains in the house. When you go out you could pop it back in and go with the shutdown hassle.

Seems to be a constant problem with Acer laptops http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=acer+aspire+7000+won%27t+shut+down&spell=1

Thanks for your help,
I may not need to do that as it's only a few months old, if all else fails it can go back.

I'm thinking it must be a hardware problem as i have updated the bios ( v1.10, v1.19 and version 1.24, the same problem with all of them) and restored to factory setting so it can't be drivers as it worked fine until a week ago.
can't think of anything else to try...

Just one more thought. Have you checked your power settings? Is hibernation or standby set? If they are, this might be the problem. If not, then, yes, I'd take it back.

Right click on Desktop
Choose Properties
The Power button will be under one of the Tabs.
Then click Hibernation tab and disable it.
Check Power scheme settings.
Apply
OK.

but i just booted from a dos boot disk, pressed the power button to turn off and same problem...
