Specifically it's the difference between the Acer Aspire 5551 here

compared to this Dell M501R

They're very similar (besides from ram) and wanted to know which one people would buy; is acer better than Dell or is it the other way round? which one is known to last longer? Thanks

acer is a budget brand but you get more for your money. Me and the wife have a dell each that are 5 and 6yrs old you decide.
I know there a budget brand, but in terms of brand quality are they seen as inferior to Dell? The two laptops are split between are literally similar, same hdd, processor, batt life, the difference is 1gb extra ram on Dell as well as Bluetooth. Are dells better quality?
defo dell ....i wld rather pay a bit extra n gt dell....i have been using dell for 6yrs no problem watsoeve:)
Dell by a long way on my experience:-

Dell 1x Vostro Lappy, owned for 4 years now, never had a problem.

Acer-2x Netbooks Battery fails, forever crashing, customer service is awful. (only owned less than 6 months!)

Would never buy an acer again, even if it had double the specs for the same money.

Stay away from acer! They're poor build and don't last very long IMO.

Same as Skoda and Bose? Zzzzz
My Acer is two years old, is used everyday at uni and has spent 10 weeks travelling the world, getting knocked about in hostels, used it airports etc. Still working aswell as day 1 and has no marks. We had two dells at work and the hinges went on both of them and they became pretty useless. You decide.

No scratches? Sounds like you took very good care of it. When i went travelling i cut a dell sized slot into my cars seat to hide my dell in. Wouldn't have taken it into the hostel i went in to in paris. Took my bmx to bed though :p oh and the dell came with demonstration videos on it being dropped from a table onto the floor and still working. Hinges are a 15minute job .
surely you meant asus!!!
Have a couple of Acers myself not bad machines for the price when you take the bloatware off. Oldest is about 5 or 6 years old and the batteries still work fine. To be honest just look for the best spec you can get for your money and don't bother about the brand too much.
