Acne advice needed (prescribed Dianette)

Hi guys, got a friend who is having a problem with Acne and was prescribed Dianette which is also a contraceptive pill. She's looked into side effects and is a little reluctant to take them especially in light of the acne returning should she discontinue use.

Any of you folks on here have any advice especially in regards to "natural/old school" remedies.

Does anything really work for it? I've always been lucky that i've never suffered with spots but i remember at school there were some who had bad Acne and whatever they took/cream they used it always looked as bad as ever.

Is she young? If so then she'll likely grow out of it. If she's older then pass.

Have they tried Oxytetracycline. This has been known to work quite well...

alot of people with acne tend to use the wrong skincare products hence making ti worse, most dont use a moisturiser because they think they have greasy skin, this also doesnt help, dependant on age she may grow out of it, most do, i would imagine if doctor has prescribed this she has tried near enough everything else

my daughter was on dianette and had no problem with any side effects. She also took the other tablets can't remeber their name but had bad side effects for some. These worked a dream for her though. Their is also another pill similar to dianette your doctor can prescribe but it does cost more to prescribe.

in my teens I had bad acne, espically around the ages of 16 - 18, which can ruin your confidence if you let it. Tried everything, went to doctor and they prescribed stuff but none of it worked. In fact a lot of them left my skin worse, would get a lot of dry skin and sore areas of skin and the spots still prevailed.

I then started drinking water - and I mean in large volumes everyday. I would drink Id say at least 4 litres a day, played havoc with my sleeping though because I'd be up twice in the night to pop to the toilet. The effect on my skin was unbelievable though. Within a week my skin was looking better, and within probably a month (cant quite remember how long now) my skin had totally cleared up!!! Never got spots again. Literally. Think after about 6 months (ish) I cut back on the water intake because it is harder than you think to drink that amount every day.

Best bit of advice I can give is to drink lots of water and not let it get you down

I really don't know the specifics of what she has tried, but how long can Oxytetracycline be used for?
Also @ DLM thanks for the link, anyone know if there is a best practice in terms of what to do if Androgens are the cause?
She is 18 now so maybe just a growing pain but it has impacted on her severely and she has become very insecure and lost confidence ( i know stress in itself may contribute) so keep the advice coming guys especially if you know of anything that has worked for some. Thanks in advance guys.

all pills have possible side effects but very few people are affected by them

Hi has she tried oxy 10 at all? It contains benzoyl peroxide so you have to be careful with it as some people are allergic to it but it really works. You can get it over the counter at the pharmacy for about 4 quid. I got it for my daughter and her face was completely clear within about 2 weeks-only the occassional spot every now and then. We have had the stuff from the doctor and none of it works this is the only thing i have found that actually does anything.

I have acne had it for years tried lots of thing over counter stuff and things doctor gave me to try.
Best thing i found was Herbalism for Lush cost about £5 really made a difference no more dry skin cause by the chemicals i was putting on. Found a lot of the time things i would be prescriped from doctor would help the acne but then cause really dry skin or flaky skin.

My daughter is on Dianette for acne as she has PCOS (poly cystic ovary syndrome). It has really helped her skin, and she has minimal side effects, although the problem does come back when she stops taking it. Having said that, she has only been on it a few months and that is supposed to be reduce when she has been on it for a longer time.
Androgens are (I think) the underlying cause if PCOS is the problem.

When she was younger, before the PCOS was diagnosed we used Weleda products:

One word... Freederm! Buy all the freederm products (cleanser, moisturiser, spot cream and exfoliator) and use them as perscribed - they work. Yes they are quite expensive - but you get what you pay for. Best products I have ever used.

Also as someone mentioned earlier, drink lots of water.

Do not touch anything with benzoyl peroxide in, very bad for your skin.
