Advice on buying a 2nd hand car

Evening all,

Anyone with some advice much appreciated. I'm currently looking to buy a relatively cheap 2nd hand car and was wondering what checks I should do and the best way to do them. i.e. making sure the car hasn't been written off, no outstanding finance, isn't stolen e.t.c.

Thanks

Make sure you get an HPI check, I got one through RAC in the past.
That's what you use to see if it's been in a serious accident, written off, has outstanding finance etc.

how cheap is cheap & what is it ? check the mot & any advises that might have been issued, timing belt been replaced ( if applicable), service history if any, check the log book (v5) matches the chassis number on the vehicle, its actually the owners car to sell, tyre wear, spare tyre & jack are with the vehicle & locking wheel nut if it has locking wheel nuts/bolts, stereo works & radio code (if applicable) are with the handbook, signs of paint work been done, over-spray in the wheel arch areas & on body trims.it doesn't smell damp or wet inside the car.engine coolant & oil levels. all keys are provided & work if central locking built into the key, the list is endless really.

Take an expert with you to view/test.

Will check all the above as rich has pointed out and will take someone more knowledgeable for the viewing.

It seems cheaper to do the text check thing rather than through the RAC. Do they do the same job?

Not all of them. Some of the cheaper ones miss things that are on the HPI check.
