Advice for a Blu ray player

I'm looking to buy a Blu-ray player for my brother-in-law in India. He has just bought a Panasonic 40 inch Full HD LCD TV and though his movie collection is 80% DVDs (yes, yes, In india its still mostly DVDs), I am sure he will move upwards to Bluray...

I don't obviously want to buy a top-end player with features that he will not even be able to use in India (like Freeview, BBC IPlayer etc) so ideally I'm looking for a budget to slightly high-end player.

What are the criteria I should consider before I decide on the brand/model? I can only think of

a. Region free (should play US/UK/India released Blurays/DVDs)
b. Resolution
c. Formats (play Blu ray/DVD and also MP3, WMA etc)
d. SD Card
e. Internal storage

Any recommendations on good BR Players will also be much appreciated !!

Thanks in advance

Very few (if any at the moment) players that are hackable for Blurays. I've been looking for one for a while.
Ebuyer didn't an H&F at the start of last year that is great, but they've dropped it.

The Sony bdp-s370 is a good, well regarded choice for under £100. Don't know if it's region hackable. It's worth ensuring the player can play Mkv files, which I think this one can. Try posting/checking out AVforums, it's probably a good one for that site.
