Advice needed on new PC

Hey, i need some advice on my new PC purchase.

I currently have a Sony Vaio FS415S laptop, standard spec apart from upgraded RAM to 2GB. It is running XP Home SP3 at the minute, and although its not exactly speedy, it does the job.

During the past week i have seen all the offers for Windows 7 pre-orders, and took the plunge. Curious to how it will work on my laptop, i installed the WIndows 7 RC, dual booting with my current XP set-up.

After a few driver issues, everything is working fine, and im very impressed with it, but could work better. Windows 7 gave it a performance score of 1.0 though, and occasionally lags a bit doing some things.

With this in mind, and prior to WIndows 7 release (as i dont want to install the retail WIndows 7 on this machine, only to find it is not working as expected, and wasting the key / activation etc), i want to upgrade to a decent spec Desktop machine.

Does any one have any advise / suggestions on a machine that will run Windows 7 effortlessly? Or if i do install Windows 7 on this machine, can i transfer the licence for it from this machine to the new desktop at a later date?

Thanks for any help

If it's only getting a score of 1.0, it probably means that you haven't installed all the drivers. Most likely, you've skipped out on the video card driver. A quick Google shows that you should have an nVidia 6400 in that system, so if you can't get drivers direct from nVidia for it, hit "laptop video 2 go" into google, and download the drivers from there. Things should improve muchly, and that ought to save you having to buy a new system just yet.

+1

The performance index should show you which aspects of your system are keeping the score low.

Virtually any new desktop will run Windows 7 effortlessly, something like the £220 ebuyer machine posted recently is more than enough. You probably want to avoid anything with the Nano or Atom processor and any really low end machines with 1GB of ram but apart from that it's just a case of take your pick.

thanks for the replies guys. It is definitely the graphics card causing the low score. I thought i installed the correct drivers, but will give the other drivers a go as stated above, so thanks for that. So is it possible to transfer a windows licence once installed and activated?

guys, thank you so much!

Just upgraded the graphics card drivers from Laptop Video 2 Go, and re run the system assessment, and now up to 2.8! Aero works, and so does transparency etc, which didnt before.

Well pleased, so thanks again! Rep added

If it's a Retail and not OEM copy then you can transfer the license as you like.

I will probably stick with my laptop for the foreseeable future now i know that it works great under WIndows 7, but just in case, HOW do i go about transferring a Windows license?
