I've just bought a new laptop, and need some advice on wireless routers.
I'm with Virgin broadband, and have been to pc world and told I need to get a netgear router.
Have been looking at Netgear WNB2100 N300 Router and USB Adapter Kit
for £79.99.
My needs are simple really, i just want to be able to use the laptop upstairs, and my son will be getting a ps3 for christmas so is this router going to do the job.
I dont have a clue, so any advice will be great.
Many Thanks

This would do the job. Yes
Has your laptop got built in WiFi.
The ps3 also has built in WiFi.
So are you willing to sell the adapter ? really need it.
#2
I think any cable wireless router will do it, dont know why it needs to be netgear. If your laptop has wireless already on it then you dont need a usb adpator
#3
I doubt you will need the adapter as all new laptops come with them built in these days. what make/model laptop is it btw?
#4
you dont HAVE to get a netgear router lol
I use one, and find it to be fine (DG834GT) but a lot of people do not recommend Netgear (not too sure why, been fine for me)

Anyway, you can get any router tbh. I think Linksys or D-Link are really good
I hear this is a solid reliable router
D-link DIR655 but thats probably too much to spend for just basic wireless needs.

Heres the netgear I have, works perfect for me

BTW you will need the usb adapter only if your computer/laptop does not have wireless built in.

The laptop has WIFI, and was told the adapter would make the laptop perform better with the wireless router?
#6
yep i get 100% connection on from upstairs to downstairs on this one [url]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3b/Netgear-DG834G-Router.jpg[/url
using the ps3 i mean

I expect they were probably talking about wireless-N versus B/G, im assuming that you just want a wireless connection so b/g will do
#10
Is the router you've got not wireless though? Seems odd that any ISP these days doesn't supply a wireless router.
#11
Thanks rickwoody, thought I would check out "real advice" before buying .
#12
lisat maybe you should give your internet provider a call and explain the situation and see if they will send you one!

I'm looking to buy a router, haven't got one as yet.
#14
Yes, that is BS about the laptop performing 'better' wireless built into laptops are fine and will work perfect with a router without the USB adapter.
Probably trying to edge on a sale!
You should be able to get one for ~£50.

I see - so, currently, how are you connecting to the internet - is it only a modem?

If that's the case, as someone else has stated, I'm fairly sure Virgin would supply you with one free of charge, as a paying customer you should demand one.

Threaten to cancel and say 'Sky will give me a free wireless router and their deal is better etc etc...'

Broadband?
Virgin will only supply free to new customers, i've had this discusion with them already and it £50 and no less
#20
^^ is worth a try, I'm starting to realise companies are craving into customer demands a lot more recently :D
I would defo complain, telling them something like how can you be supplying me with cable and not give me something as essential as a wireless router. and then play the card of leaving and you should be sent one soon !
#21
well if you want one now, you can basically go on the pcworld website and click on networking and then cable routers simple. how much do you want to spend. there are some on argos, what shops do you have near you for this type of thing

This looks good and belkin is a good make and if you ever upgrade your wireless then it will handle it

lol hey i got to go soon lol make your mind up :-D

Will the pc world one, work as well as the argos belkin?
#31
both will work fine for what you will do (basic wireless needs)
Unless you live in some mansion, you wont notice much difference between the Belkin and Netgear
The reason the Belkin costs more is the N-Range, jus means it will have a wider range, but again for a average house and connection its not needed.

yes they will both do the job and the pcworld one is a steal if you can get call and collect it for 29.99
#33
Cheers munaaf, I'm off to pc world.

Thanks again everyone Rep left

I have a router you can have for £20 delivered - its a Thomson 585, in perfect condition and will do what you want without any problems (its an 8.11g speed device), btw, dont pay PC World £80, that is over the top, and, as already stated there is a good chance you dont need the adapter anyway assuming your laptop has working wifi in it.

cheers,
dan

I called virgin and said to them that I needed a router and could they send me one for free and at first they said no, and I said oh loads of other broadband companies are giving them away to their customers, they then sent me one for nothing!!!
#36
lisat is now wireless, many thanks to all for the help.
went with the Belkin in the end, pc world out of stock of the netgear for £29.99
