Advice Needed Please

Last night at my parents takeaway the delivery driver went to deliver the last order before finishing up work, the guys he was delivering to stole the food without paying.

Basically what happened was my driver got there rang the doorbell and the people opened the door and ask to look at the contents of the meals, My driver asked them to pay up first (happened before when my driver gave the meal to the "customer" and he slammed the door and did not pay him) they were insisting to see it, so my driver was going to show them what was in the bag and two of the guys grabbed my driver and took the food (unsure whether they hit my him or not) and went back into the house. My driver phoned the police told him to file a report tomorrow.

We are £35 down and have to go down to the police station tomorrow. This happened about 3 months ago as well and we filed a report with the police and still have not heard a response as to the follow up of the case!!

Is there anything we can do? Is this applicable to the Small Claims Court?

Many thanks

I don't think it is the driver he is trustworthy plus we rung the number the guy gave us and it was ringing then someone hung up and after that it was switched off.

also we were thinking if we file the report it is still their words against ours. the only evidence we have is the phone number, address and name!

Send a few of the boys round, chances are it was somebody off their head and drunk or stoned with the munchies, no one in a straight frame of mind would thieve food ordered to their own home!! Send your two biggest mates round tomorrow and give tghem a knock, chances are they will realise what they have done and feel stoopid as it is!! tell em it was £45 worth too!

Have you spoken to any other take aways in the area? it might have happened to them and itll be a good idea to warn them! :)

were it the same people stealing the food twice? I must say i have never heard of someone wanting to check a takeaway before they pay for it because normally the person delivering tells you what you are paying for before you hand them the cash.

make them "pay"

I think their windows on the front of their house would cost more then £35 to replace

I agree. Because you wouldn't be putting yourself in any danger whatsoever, and you have the added benefit of the shattered glass not leaving any evidence! What could possibly go wrong?

Well they could go to the same to the business, but I would just escalate further and further until they were defeated.

What the hell if your drivers are being assaulted and robbed go down to the police station and dont leave until something is done. The driver should have called the police on the doorstep of the customer saying i have just been robbed in the street and i know where my attacker is to get a squad car down.

Or you should spam the hell out of that persons postal address and mobile number. If you decide to go vigilante then you have a business to lose not just £35 give your drivers strict instrunction to get the money first no matter what.

Absolutely agree. Not only has a mugging crime taken place but the Police even know where the culprit lives. Get down to the police station and demand justice. They cant just file a report without investigating (the evidence will be in their bin!).
#13
Why in the world did you deliver to that same address?

When the Driver saw who it was and what they did the previous time he should have walked away...

The Police don't care - it's not important to them.

The Police took 12 days to start investigating the assault of a 15 year old girl who then got murdered so what chance do you have for a Takeaway theft????
#14
Think you need to start keeping a list of addresses not to deliver to and ask around other local takeaways and swap addresses.

How awful that someone can't even do their job without getting assaulted :x

Hope things settle down for you, let us know how you get on with the police.

as a joke we were discussing these options but was thinking they probably will know it was us and they know where our takeaway is so it is a lose lose situation!!

no we dont think it was the same people, well i didn't see them so i will have to ask the driver today! yes it sounds strange so the driver was reluctant to show them especially after last time where he gave them the food and they just closed the door. so this time he was more careful in not giving them the food first but they just held him down and took it off him.

He did ring the police but they just told him to report it this morning. when this happened last time they said they will be go there and for the driver to wait for them and after an hour they didnt turn up and then they rung me saying they were too busy to go and we will have to file the report which they said will take about a week for them to look at but still no reply although because i filed the report over the phone i did have about 3 phone calls from different people asking me to tell them the situation again and again!!

After last time we gave him strict instructions to get the money first but because there was at least two guys this time and they was holding him down he didnt have much choice but he let them take the meal. Am not too sure if he was hurt but i guess it is a good thing they didn't rob him or stab him!

It wasn't the same address we definitely wouldn't deliver to the same address because we have noted down the address of these people. so we dont think it is the same person.

Yeah we have always thought that but theres not a lot more we can do and there is nothing we can do to prevent it.

We shall be doing that so everyone is informed!

Yeah it is awful and I can't imagine what the driver went through. If anything had happened to him it would be awful!!

Thank you guys for all the replies, we are going to go to the police station later and will update you on what happened there!!

Lol...what a joke our Police force is.

I have just been robbed.... I know who the robber is......I know where they are right now......

Oh could you call back tomorrow.

What an absolute joke. You couldn't make it up.

I would actually call the local papers as it would make quite an interesting story.

Well it would around my way. The top story here in my weekly local rag is how commuters suffered a few hours delay after two cars collided lol.

To the OP, phone the police again about the original crime and ask for a progress update and say the local press want a comment to print.

Just watch them jump :)

I wouldnt mind if it was down to resources, but you can bet if you were an MP, judge etc then the police would go into overdrive to get the right result.

Yeah I know especially since there was violence involved I thought that they will be there straight away......but no.

but it is a big deal! Your employee was assaulted and mugged. No offence, but its just that kind of attitude that allows the police / MPS to say crime is falling.

Because nobody thinks its worth reporting crimes these days!

I totally understand what you mean, and I will report it like I did last time, but I can understand why people wouldn't report it because it feels as though nothing has been done and people are still doing it knowing that they will not be caught etc...

But I totally agree that it should be reported to the police. It was the suggestion about going to the news paper, I wasn't too sure whether they would think it is good enough or not.

Hi,

Thought I would give you guys an update, spoke to the driver today and he wasn't hurt (thank god) but he went to the police station with his friend as his english is not too good. The impression they were given was that this was not a crime therefore it cannot reported nor get a crime reference number and the only way to deal with this is to go back and get the money back. The driver said the reason why the police said it wasn't a crime was that it happens a lot. I am not 100% sure whether that was said or there may be some misunderstanding so I want to emphasis that I am not trying to accuse the police or the driver!

Also confirmed some details with him turns out the place he went to was flats and when he rung the bell no one answered (so we guess they have given a random flat number) so he had to call them to come down and thats then they threatened to hit him if he didn't give them the food.

I did call the police to see what happened but there was no answer from the station they reported it to (was about 6pm though!) but the operator I spoke to said that it is definitely a crime and maybe the reason it wasn't reported was because of language barriers.

I will ring the station again tomorrow and see what was actually said and whether we need to file a report or not and I will update again on here!!

Thanks for all the comments and interest!

Get the badge numbers of any coppers not doing their job (they are legally required to give you the number when requested) and go over their heads.

Parts of this thread were painful to read. A driver was assaulted and called the police - it boggles the mind that they'd not come out there and then to deal with it.

This is exactly what people don't report crime - all it does it cause them pain, hassle and headaches with NOTHING in return. No justice. Unbelievable!

Have you noticed the distinct lack of any real police officer's advice on this thread? Surely some must visit HUKD.

Mind you, I can see their problem with all the paperwork they would have to do only for the CPS to not proceed or the judge gives them a £50 fine at most.

I was surprised that they didn't come out straight away!

The driver was told that this happens often in the area, but surely they can do something so people are less likely to do this? i.e. caution them or something so they know that the police are going to do something and not just ignore it.

I have tried ringing that police station again but still no one picks up. So I am thinking I might report the crime online. They shouldn't ignore that right?

What town do you live in then and police station do you ring? You might have the wrong number. Ring up another one as you dont have to report a crime to your nearest one.

I rung the Hayes (Middlesex) police station as that was the station the driver went in to report the crime.

I have now reported it online and said they should contact me in 72 hours...so I guess I will just have to wait and see!!!
