which model did you get? Are you sure the usb port isn't just to update the bios on the tv.

Model number?

I looked up Regza on Amazon and found 37XV635D is mentioned in the reviews section as able to play avi files off a fat32 formatted stick.

I don't think it can play them but you can get an Upscaling DVD player (worth getting anyway) that can play them.

Amazon have both a Toshiba and Phillips model for £45 (respectively) that both have Avi playback via USB and can be made multiregion (play american DVD's).

Divx, Xvid and Avi are essentially the same thing when it comes to players. If you want too play these types of files you will need to get hold of some form of external player that can connect to your TV.

I would recommend an Upscaling DVD player like this or this as they will make your DVD's look amazing and they both have usb ports on the front and can play Divx files.

I had the same issue with a Sony TV I bought, said video support via USB but turned out it was old Mpeg support for people using video cameras and not avi.

I've just got a Toshiba 37XV635DB and it plays divx of my usb drive. Fantastic!
Must be model dependent. Sorry
