Advice on accomidation for uni second year

I was talking to some people wher eI live and they say they already cant get accomidation for September as there was an accomidation fair on Monday and loads of rooms are gone already.

Now I would just pay but that would mean destroying my overdraft as most landlords want 2 months rent in advance plus deposit equal to a month and that would make it around £850

Welcome to the real world, drbluebox.

The uni will have an approved list of landlords - have you tried any of them? Have you tried any letting agencies? My son has to pay a full term in advance, and a 'retainer' for the hols, but they accept post-dated cheques, so he's effectively paying only one month at a time.

landlords differ in how they like to take money in Nottingham's (where im at uni), some like a deposit and then three payments at the beginning of each term (when you get you loan) others prefer on a month by month basis. remember to get the full price of the accommodation and work out how much it is really going to cost you for the weeks your there, some landlords quote a certain price but tie you down to 11 or 12 so your paying for time i pressume you wont be there. ask about reduced rent during the summer months. and dont get badgered into signing the contract straight away, if you know anyone in the legal profession get them to look over it, failing that you should have some kind of accomadation service at uni that will do this free of charge.

lastly dont worry to much about getting a house and jump at the first one you see, the houses arent going to run out cause the same amount of students are looking at the same houses every year, if you get my meaning. personally i wish i had the guts to stick it out and leave it to the last minute cause youve a better chance of haggling your price down. when i moved into my house i was gutted cause the house two doors down was going for half the price i was paying.

where are you at uni mate? have you got a bunch of house mates sorted or are you going solo?

Its only January, landlords and letting agents will likely stagger properties onto the market right up until September. 2 months rent up front is excessive, bond shouldn't be more than about 125% of a months rent.

in my personal experience this isn't the case, they try and scare you into getting a house before you go home for Christmas, 50% of the people i know had theirs sorted before Christmas when i moved from halls to private accommodation. i also know people who waited until march and got massive reductions for houses cause the landlords are bricking it that their house will stay empty,

Thats not very nice also I wrote that when it was late and I was tired and couldnt be bothered working out the spelling perfectly

Thanks for the other replies all

I was just worried as the landlords wanted so much in one go, i.e not the deposit then the rent when I in but the deposit plus the 2 months rent this month(or when you see place)

One mature student, in a sea of immature students, now spread your wings and fly from them, like a seagull, fly. Don't let your wings get caked in oil - you shall sink.

P.S. What are you studying? Not studding, I do not believe you are a male horse or an owner of one.

You shouldn't have to work anything out, it should just naturally come out correctly spelt.
