hello everybody im looking for advice on building a computer.

I'd like to use it for CAD modeling (using Pro|E Wildfire) and FEA analysis (using Abaqus) and for more general PC tasks MS Office, playing .mkvs. I'd also like it to be quiet cause at the minute the PC i'm using is loud enough to be annoying when working.

I'd like advice on what components to buy please

Had the same budget, although its not a complete system (no graphics card, mouse, keyboard etc, but should give you something to go on, until I or someone else has a look at ebuyer/scan etc for components)

For your two specialised programs you need to find out what hardware works best with them. Is a fast CPU a good thing? Do they thrive on lots of memory? Can they take advantage of the massively parallel processor of a graphics card?

For general use anything will do, although if you want video playing it might be worth getting a graphics card or chip that can offload the HD decoding work.

Quietness is just a matter of buying quiet fans and a quiet HDD. You generally want a case that takes 120mm fans as they're quieter than 80mm ones.

So your just looking for MB, processor and ram?

Well I am upgrading soon and going with:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/160994
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159069
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164790

Comes in at about £250. Had plenty of expansion capabilities. Also you can unlock the 4th processor core on the ASrock MB.

If you're using it for CAD then you want a fast processor and lots of ram.

Best place to ask though is the forums at www.buildyourown.org.uk .

what do you mean unlock the 4th processor

The new X3 Phenom 720's are essentially a Phenom X4 but with either a bad 4th core or just a normal X4 with a core disabled. Some have been able to unlock the 4th core.
#12
how do you know if its a bad core or a normal one

You won't until you buy it and try it.
