good luck, computers are really hard to get anywhere, as they just say its software, but you can try but no doubt they will send it off to whoever to repair

always found comet REALLY hard work to deal with.

Approach them instead of posting here. You cannot know until then as it depends on the nature of your problem.

Good luck.

worked with Acer laptops for a few years now never had any problems with them. Only crap thing about them is all the preinstalled bloatware slowing the machines down.:)

Dh bought an Acer base unit from Comet last year. After 29 days it couldn't be turned on, the on off switch was caput. Couldn't copy anything or delete banking etc details. Comet assured us it would be data secure. One month later we were told it was at last in transit back to Comet from Acer. It was stolen. I had really bad times thereafter, the best Comet could do was offer me a new PC if I paid them another £30 and drove 20 mile round trip to collect it. They gave me an Acer. Guess what, within 3 days the on off switch was faulty. Comet Hq arranged as a goodwill gesture to send me a cheque for £30. I had spent a week cancelling credit cards, etc etc but hey ho tough. They asked me to bring pc number two in for repair, but I hadn't got the emotional reserves to go through that again, so it's been on day and night ever since. Dh has bought a thingy for £60 to copy everything on to so when they trash this one I'll still have my photos this time.
I think most of Comet's stock is seconds and I will never buy anything there again ever ever ever.

models are Acer X130 & X381. A guy on hukd had the same model recalled by Staples when they realised it had an all models fault.

just spoke to comet not impressed was told 2-3weeks for repair . we was sold the full deal on the basis that if it goes wrong its just changed over
just dont like the idea of sending it in and having to wipe all my info off and getting it back with no fault found
#15
Had a feeling it was the x3200 lol.

Contact Comet again,as long as it says that in the warranty you bought then you will not have a problem, obviously providing you can prove what you have just said.

Probably a wise precation. Make sure you use a file shredder to remove the evidence!

BTW..... if the sales person did say they would just exchange if a fault developed, I expect he thought he was speaking to someone very guillable and could get away with it.

I spoke to Acer as part of our saga and it was a waste of time. I also suggested to Comet that we could take the hard drive out and keep it safe this time as it's a mechanical fault, but that's Not Allowed as it will invalidate the Acer guarantee. I also contacted a solicitor about the whole affair, he says they charge £120 an hour and have never had a worthwhile result dealing with Comet. Comet also declined to refund me for the cost of downloads on my stolen pc, but thought they might refund the cost of the 80 odd telephone calls I made sorting out the chaos. They felt the week I'd spent on the phone calls, the month with no pc, a week with no credit cards and the distress was not their problem. Best of luck, but expect the worst.

hmmmm looking that way

A lesson learned - AVOID Acer, they're awful cheap and nasty machines, the above and my previous dealings prove this.. and same with Comet....

so finally I think i'm getting somewhere 1st ive ripped off the seal carefully and attacked the pc with a hoover ..It was full of dust ,cleaned it all out relocated the unit somewhere else now switched once quiet as a mouse now :p
so hopefully it was just a overheating problem if not a cup of coffee should fix it ..
Many thanks everyone for their advice and comments :)

Since there is no colour but there is whiteness, it indicates the backlighting is on but there is no video information. This indicates dry joints that exists either in the ribbon cable from the power inverter to the LCD panel. As the backlight is on, the ribbon cable is providing current into the panel but cracks in joints elsewhere on the cable means there is no colour information to drive the polarisation filter. This is an inherent fault and most certainly not caused by user actions so if you state this to Comet, they do will need to act upon your claims (possibly subject to a technician's report, though). This is assuming the display was bought from Comet.

Furthermore, since you have restored the PC (assumedly to factory default settings), Comet can not possibly argue the case of user error, installing malevolent software and so on. I can't explain the locking up, though, because there are several reasons for this.

Just had a thought, the white screen may also be caused by a faulty VGA cable. The monitor is still receiving power but rather than it not receiving the colour information from the ribbon cable inside, it may not be receiving the colour information from the VGA cable (or a digital cable).

Ah, when you mentioned white screen, it now transpires that you are referring to the screen temporarily showing whiteness immediately before shutting down. This is a different issue to what I wrote earlier. If you were referring to a white screen that is shown for a considerable amount of time, then that would infer an issue with cracks in the joints or a cable issue.

Before 64 Bit was a major thing, I bought a HP laptop. When I got it home I found out it was 64 bit and it wouldnt work with all my works printer.

When I got back to comet for a refund because 64 bit was not on any of the price info tickets, it was a nightmare. They point blank said no. They did offer me a refund minus 10% - In the end I took it, and had to write letters to get my 10% back. - They refused the first 2 letters, but I made up a false watchdog reference number and said I would cooperate fully with the bbc if they dont refund. Refund came back in 1 day lol!
