if it still works u might get it done yourself, I think data recovery is v v expensive, of course you want piccies tho got an idea jus go n check BRB

if it still powers up and is detected by your pc although it doesn't recognise it you might be able to buy a program called stellar phoenix which should be able to retreive your lost data.

http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm

$99 so approx £50

Finaly, jus had a rummage and I used to use Hirens boot cd. I think you can download it and it has loads ov helpful stuff. you can either boot from it and sort / recover internal HDD or boot and use it to recover externals. Hope it helps if not I could send a copy of mine, if thats legal
Any way hope you get it sorted, BTW data recovery takes ages, last one I did for a floppy took over 1 hr :?

A portable hard drive eh. So presumably this is the back up drive.
I think Happy Donkey is right and data recovery is very expensive.
You would probably be better off buying another hard drive and backing up the originals again.

Right, that's the hard drive covered. As for the other half, get rid and get yourself a younger model who is not so clumsy. :w00t:

>it has all our family baby photos etc on!!!

Which is why you should ALWAYS have a backup of important files on CDs or DVDs.

A computer can get stolen, or crash, or get ruined in a fire or flood.

Important files should always be backed on to CD or DVD, maybe with a spare copy at friends or relatives house.

i know i know!!! we put them on the hard drive to back up whilst we blitzed the laptop, then we were going to put them back on and keep them on the hard drive and whilst doing that it was dropped!!! will get the dopey other half to read all this and get back to u all.... thanks ur all fab!!!

the best data recovery software i've used is getdataback but TBH if it was dropped then it may be the caddy itself thats damaged (in which case the hard drive may well spinup in another caddy or connected through IDE or sata.

if the drive itself is knackered then they go one of 2 ways. either the board or the motor if its the board then you can swap the circuit over with a drive from the same family. if its the motor then it needs to be stripped in a clean room and rebuilt with a new motor head assembly. which is why professional data recovery is so expensive. i'd remove the drive from the caddy and directly connect it myself

What do you mean by 'blitzed the laptop'? It might be possible to retrieve previously deleted files from there...
