First off treat me as a novice here!! (but a quick learner !!)
I currently use Orange Broadband with a ADSL modem. (speedtouch 330)
What do I need to purchase or do to become wireless.
Any help welcome.

I just wrote a massive post, but screw that, what is your set up?

Do you have a laptop or desktop?

And what is your ideal budget to get this sorted?

Hi
From the sounds of it you have a wired connection to your pc currently.

There are some options -
(a) Consider the option of going for Orange supplied wireless equipment. My sister has that and it was straight forward to install and set up. I think you get a V.O.I.P phone as well with that. I can always ask her.

(b) Buy an ADSL Wireless Modem/Router. You will need to receive that signal to your laptop(L top) or desktop(D top) hence you will need an aerial i.e. wireless card for your D and L top.

(c) If you do not like the idea of wireless then use mains powered method to carry the signal round your house. I think this would still need a router. I would need to check.

I am currently setting up network at home so feel free to pick my brains.

There is a good website I have found which sells this equipment. I do not own it. It's just nice to spend money where I feel it is valued rather then paying an exorbitant price.

Do you have more then two PCs to connect ?

thx

HI, you have two options:

1. Call Orange and pgrade your package and they will send you a wireless adsl modem router, pros to this is they can they support you fully. Cons - Is oranage support usually have an IQ of 50!

2. But an "ADSL Modem Wireless Router", get a good brand like Netgear, Belkin or Similar. These tend to have good utilties that will help you configure them.

In addition to this you need a wireless PC or laptop to go wireless.

You can buy a wireless USB dongle that will work with the routers for not that much, I personally would buy a package like this from Pc World: NETGEAR DGB111GUK Wireless Routers

you can get 5% discount using various codes on here and I think Quidco too.....

To try and answer some of the above questions,

1. I have a desk top pc (Dell Dimension 3100)
2. I have been with orange for some years now
3. I dont know which package I have, it is unlimited 8mb speed and costs me £17.99 a month
4. I dont know if I have already got a wireless pc ability
5. Budget, ?? dont know, what ever it takes I suppose.

Thanks for replies so far.

speed touch do a wireless router as well. I know because the isp i work for support speedtouch modems and wireless routers.
Check with your isp first to make sure they support the router your planning on buying, then you will know your problems will be supported.
Wireless routers are pretty simple. Router settings are generally same or similar.
speedtouch.lan in your web browser will take you to the router settings.

i would phone up orange and ask for your mac code, and see what you can get for a start, no-one outside of contract should be paying that, find a deal you want and go for it, they offer new customers a £12 deal with a wireless router but i think its a limited download

Maybe she has uncapped download limit?

shop around though, some fab offers out there BUT be carefull some have contracts for 24 months!!

Our ( as in where i work) uncapped for 1mg is the same as shes paying! LOL

Either ask Orange for the wireless router and get a dongle like this one:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131825

Or get your own router and dongle in a package like this one:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/119374

Set it up, securing the wireless connection with wep or wpa, backup the router settings and away you go. :)

here is what Orange are offering

Change from Broadband at £17.99 fastest speed 2GB cap to Home Max - £24.00 a month, up to 8 Meg speed, Livebox, Unlimited usage allowance (fair use policy applies), landline, evening and weekend telephone calls. Plus inclusive calls at anytime using your Livebox to UK local and national numbers, Orange mobile and 30 international destinations (fair use policy applies)

Upside to this although a dearer package than I am on at moment is, I can get rid of BT line rental (I think)
And I think my PC is wireless ready, so it should be a simple change over ?
So it looks like for £6 more a month, I can lose BT and get unlimited calls and have wireless equipment (livebox) supplied.
Sounds not a bad deal

Thats a TERRIBLE price, companies like Entanet are £20 a month 30 gig peak limit 300 gig off peak, no minimum contract and 24/7 uk based customer support.

Have to buy own router I have one I used to use for them before I moved to a cable area which I can sell for £15 inc all leads ans settings.

VERY easy to set up.
