A PCI card for video input, or a USB DVB-T stype stick that you plug in to a USB slot to pick up Freeview?

A PCI video card can indeed record video - something as simple as Windows Movie Maker (on most PCs as standard) will capture video input, and it's pretty decent too.

I'm with virgin so i would like to pick that up so not for freeview really. I think im going to have a look around for a PCI video card then

So you just want something to capture an analogue signal. This is USB but is cheap.

I was thinking of somthing like this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/735198?source_id=aw&camp_id=Radio%20&%20Telly%20UK

is this the sort of price they go for or can i get one cheaper

Well yes but you stated your not going to use the TV recording function so paying 10 times the price seems a little silly!

If your going to spend more you may as well get a cheap second hand analogue DVD recorder, then you wont have to have the PC on and will have a scheduler.

A 'Video card' is generally a video output card, i.e. a graphics card.

Basically there are two options:

A 'tuner' card like the Hauppauge you linked to that takes the incoming signal from the aerial/cable/dish and translates it into a picture itself.

A video input/capture card that takes a picture signal (from a virgin box that the cable feeds into) and puts that to the computer.

I think Virgin forbid connecting any devices other than their equipment to your virgin cable line so you're probably out of luck with the first, although it's worth contacting them.

Thanks that has helped a bit.
