Basically i have a 60GB PS3, but in order to release some funds and because I dont really need the extra backwards compatability and stuff I was considering offering a switch with a 40gb and 80 -100 cash (assuming the 60gb is going for 350-370 and the 40gb is going for 250-270)

What do people think? Would that be asking for too much?

I think that you would be better off selling the 60gb, and then buying a 40gb, or ask for more money.

A 2nd hand 60gb should fetch ~£380-£400 and 2nd hand 40gb ~£220-£240.

Wow, you can get a PS3 40GB for £220? Might really be worth it then , is that from ebay or do they pop up on this website at that price? (What ive seen so far is that people selling here get the prices mentioned above)

Someone would be very lucky to get £270 for a second hand one when they are only £279.99 new!
